We need a VSTI that can deliver choked chords. Romplers can't cut it. What is on the horizon?

Post

Choked chords?

You mean like palm-muted heavy guitar accents?

Or do you mean a sustained chord that triggers a release-sample when you stop holding it?

Not palm muting, but choking which has a sharp percussive sound on E-guitar. You hear it all over funk music.

the only thing I know of would be Virtual geetar- I have the regular edition and there is some funk inspired riffs on there. I havent used electric edition, which may or maynot be better for this. You could always hire a guitarist, or spend a year practicing. Most people can at least play rhythm guitar pretty competentantly with a year of practice.

Ask a friendly guitarist on this board to record them for you.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Aha! That makes it clearer.

So you want that clean and funky percussive rhythm stuff. With the additional bonus of being able to add a wah and reverb to it for that 70's retro vibe... 8)

Want it in a VSTi, you say? I haven't heard of such a thing. Perhaps we could build one in SynthEdit.

Ah, like a telecaster with off-phase elements followed by a compressor set with a tad of attack and maybe some chorus?

Hmmm, did you try Slayer or other physical modelling plucked strings? (I didn't...)

In case you'd *only* need the chokes/mutes (without any tonal information - which could eventually be added using some plain guitar sound) you could perhaps get away fine with a bunch of recycled patterns of chokes/mutes.

This is what I just did in 5 minutes:

http://home.arcor.de/s.franck/temp/ChokeTempo.mp3
Just to demonstrate how these recycled loops will follow a wide tempo range nicely.

http://home.arcor.de/s.franck/temp/ChokeAutoWah.mp3
With an additional autofilter (Kjaerhus) on top.

http://home.arcor.de/s.franck/temp/ChokeManWah.mp3
With the same filter, this time the frequency sweep is drawn in manually - should sound pretty convincing for a wah guitar if used in background.

Nice Sascha. But it would be much better to play them or get someone to lay down a few. I mean doesn't everyone play guitar these days. Seems I can't go anywhere without bumping into guitar players. Though it seems good drummers are still hard to find.

Of course - that's why I said so in the first place.
Still, sometimes such workarounds might help.

Btw, from what I remember, virtual guitarist has got some pretty good funky patterns inside.

Good stuff, Sascha.

Yes, a virtual funk rhythmatist VST is now formulating in my head! Funny to think I was doing this kind of funk guit stuff in Fast Tracker MODs back in the day (a decade ago!) with samples of my own playing.

If I actually get time for this, I'll probably collect sample sets from a few different players: you up for that? :hihi:
