Still pretty new around here, and I'm really curious how "free trial" synths influence the competition. Do other entrants normally end up purchasing the synth to keep access? Or do you mostly just one-and-done it, knowing that you'll lose access to your session after the trial? Or do people often skip trial synth months?

The synth seems amazing btw! Fit for an eternity of exploration...which is part of the problem lol

To be even more transparent, I'm trying to determine if hiding from my family during Thanksgiving to play with this will be worth it 😆

That depends entirely on the person and what they, or you, would want to do. I can't speak for anybody, but back when we did Myth, I was hoping to simply win it, since a Dawesome NFR is [still] one of the prizes; but I didn't end up winning, and the trial expired. I would still end up buying it later on, but it's still up to you~

REMINDER TO EVERYONE HERE:

I remastered a bunch of my own personal wavetables back in 2023 for the Wavetable round; and as wavetables, they still work for Kontrast or any other wavetable synth! 😉

I think Dawesome synthesizers and effects is one of the most worthwhile choices to buy. Few people approach plug-in development with such love, thoughtfulness and ingenuity as Peter. In addition, if you try very hard and get into the top 5, you will see One Dawesome NFR among the prizes, which will allow you not to lose the fruits of your labors.

But in general, yes, there are months when people skip the synthesizer for this or other reasons, or download it for a month and never open it again. Albeit I believe that a month spent learning a new and complex instrument pays off anyway by acquiring new and consolidating old skills.

Although, as far as I know, Thanksgiving is a very important holiday in some countries, so perhaps this is the time you should spend with your family and without hiding, but certainly compensating for this with other freed time intervals during the month!

If you are talking about demo mod and activation: you go to the Tracktion website using the link from the page of the month and log in to your account or create one if you do not have, then you get to the page with a request for a Free Trial, tick two boxes and click Submit. Now you launch Kontrast with the Internet turned on, click Activate (the banner in the middle or the yellow button in the lower right corner), enter your username and password of the Tracktion account and become the proud owner of a fully functional plug-in for 90 days.

Awesome. Thanks. I thought it didn't give me a trial or something but it was just my password.

So next, what do I do about writers block?

Nobody knows that) But Kontrast is damn good for just putting random stuff in it and twisting the knobs at random or using numerous randomizers! It also allows a visual approach - try to make something that looks (and moves) interesting, it may distract the brain with a non-standard task. In addition, there are no restrictions on samples this month.

Thanks! I just played with Kontrast a bit, and I would not be surprised if I end up buying it. So well-designed, flexible, and intuitive. Not to mention unique! Being able to instantly drag & drop or click to export the last note played 🤯. Then I could bring that back in as a new wavetable OR image??? Plus all of the visual feedback of each little change, even velocity, key pressure, and pitch bend.

I don't know if I can compete with all of the insanely talented people here, but this is some great motivation I tell ya!

I just played with Kontrast, and I am blown away! It's intuitive, visual, flexible, sounds amazing, and so unique. Very well-designed. I still can't get over the fact that I can see the velocity, key pressure, and pitch bend simultaneously through graphic feedback on the keyboard. And easily export the last played note! 🤯

Great point. I learned so much from playing with Zebralette last month. In fact, I spent more time with it today than I did with Kontrast 😁. But that's partially because I'm still tweaking my track (I might share a final version just for fun).

I think discovering OSC is going to end up costing me. This is too addictive! lol

I'm out. 1.) It's another thing that requires a PhD 2.) It repeatedly froze Bitwig. 3.) Seems somewhat buggy in my setup.
Some patches don't survive closing and reloading a project on my system at random. After reloading a project all over sudden one single key refuses to play on a single patch!?!? Only after clicking into the modes section in the synth it went back to work ... okay, that is only true, if clicking into the gui is not freezing up bitwig completely
After 4 or 5 occasions yesterday where I was forced to kill bitwig from the task manager, the session today started with yet another 2 freeze ups ... no thank you.
Probably the culprit is my setup. Don't know. All other stuff seems to work. But I don't have the energy to go bug hunting.
Have fun. CU may be in december

I'm OUT. No Windows 10 or later on my home built dinosaur computer. Probably don't have enough CPU either. I can still rawk out though. lol
