The only guitar of mine with flatwounds is my Gretsch Electromatic 12 string. Rounds are jangly to the point of shrillness on a 12 string electric. Flatwounds are strange animals.

I love flatwounds on my jazz boxes. Gretsch doesn't make jazz boxes though they do make hollow body guitars more suited for rockabilly and country.

That's what they were made for (and basses). Roger McGuinn from The Byrds uses flatwounds on his Ricky. More expensive, but they give that sound. Playing it unplugged, though, sounds flat and lifeless.

Totally nerded out and bought a Warm Audio Passive DI for my bass, so I couldn't hear the Cinemag transformer  . Works nice on Guitar + boost pedal too. Getting the mini Rupert Neve Designs Active DI but it's been held up in the post. Bleeding US customs :bang: !

You need to try an Avalon U5 some day.

Yes, probably, if I can get past the price and size.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Lone Wolf Blues Company Little Red, a bit of a bargain.

Thought about the Avalon, then ordered a poor man's version, the ART TUBE MP/C.

I've had the Tube MP Studio V3 and LeVeLAr for years and loved them both, despite the low voltage which is much maligned. The MP/C is an updated combo package. Only downside seems to be a reduced frequency response.

I've heard a lot of praise for that, so I looked closer.
But there were fixed steps for tone, that you could see was specific boost of certain ranges.
- there were curves showing how bass and treble change with each setting

So also saw that you could take signal directly from speakers, so asked if these setting of tone was for adjust for speaker, like cabinet emulation
- but it was not as they replied
- so seems like a one trick pony and a lot of money just for bass

There was a real nice bass tone on jingles in a series I watched, Reggie Hamilton was part of that session as I searched around.
- so emailed him what he was using
- a REDDI and his fender signature bass if course
- that's me going all nerd on anything I do trying to improve total setup for studio

https://www.adesignsaudio.com/reddi-all-tube-direct-box

But Hamilton's signature bass was over the top $4000, so a Sandberg TM5 became the bass for me, $1300. Nails jazz bass and somewhat up to precision if you want.

If you have nice preamps in your setup, the DI of those can very well do the job. Got a SSL Pure Drive Quad, and those various modes for distortion does wonders for bass too.
- for about $1100 you get 4 channels of spectacular sound for anything external you want in computer
- mikes, line input, DI
- I have used ADAT only, but it can do as audio interface over usb too as I understand

I rendered some midi stuff for synth and piano from external gear, and what a difference in just doing this on those tracks.
- but it takes a little experiment with levels if using the non-clean modes
- just as many YT demos do going full blast +24 dB is way too much distortion
- full blast +24 dB on peaks is getting 0 dBFs into computer
- so stay with peaks at +12 dB and you are good

So to get a boost for (home)studio overall you can get three birds with one stone, kind of, with investing in good preamps for anything.
- excellent bass DI too

Not a one trick pony and not just for bass, but yes, a lot of money for a DI.

Were you going all flat, or which steps did you do on Tone on bass?
- it was very strict curves you got for bass and treble each position
- in manual you can see these

Overall stumped how much just preamps can do, very exiting....the clever thing SSL did was to make a 4 channel version as well, not needing 8 simultaneous, so cost half of full 8 ADAT channels.

Combined with the high cut, it has 14 settings, all drastically different from one another. I used to track all my synths with different settings, which did a good job of giving each its own space in the mix.

Is there no way to monitor the SSL Pure Drive as an interface via a master output or headphones?
