mixer -> hp filter -> delay (up to sub-millisecond) -> saturator -> filter -> mixer (and back to the former mixer)

and take it from there — by adding additional effects into the chain, modulating the mixer/feedback amount or delay speed, etc. It’s a vast playground and great sound design tool.
You can do this with the Bitwig delay plug ins. They all have a feedback loop plug in chain where you can add and plug ins you like into the feedback loop.

Really powerful, easy to use, expressive and fun.

I wish I had one basic delay that I used for everything, but for whatever reason I can't find 'the one', or even 'the main one'.

I do like the UAD delays they all sound great, though some are quite their own things.

Valhalla delay and the free supermassive especially are great.

+1 for ripple, and I use d16 Sigmund at times, and occasionally something from guitar rig.

You can't go wrong with a Sixth Sample plugin. Even less so when it's free. I especially like Nase and Cramit. I just wish the former came with more selectable noise profiles. But that's a topic for a different time. Do you feel like you're loosing out on using the free Deelay versus the PE version?
I bought the PE version - well worth it

Bleass Tides is excellent. You can do the whole effects in the feedback path thing.

Ohmboyz infinity is probably the most comprehensive. That does as much as any delay I've come across (distortion, filters, pitch shifting, speed, frequency shifting, multitap) and you have a really extensive modulation and macro system to play around with.

Yeah same. There's always something missing that the other plugins have. It's like the devs got together and plotted to omit one different thing from each of their plugins so we have to buy all of them

I would go for that if Ohmforce had allowed me a cross grade from Ohmicide 2 to the new version but they didn’t so I don’t feel I can rely on them

I got it through a crossgrade from Ohmicide (S)

I think it was a kind of "complete my bundle" situation.

For 3rd party I'm down to just 5 delays depending on what's needed: Valhalla Delay, Recirculate, Zen Delay, Sigmund v2, and Echoleffe. It's been awhile, and I've yet to think "I need a different delay" beyond these.

Wow somehow I completely missed the fact that a plugin version of Zen Delay exists, thanks for the heads up!

Oh, talking about powerful/versatile delays: PSP's 285 can be had for ~20bucks right now, so with that in mind I think it's rather deserving the thread title...

Zen Delay is quite a trip, and very flexible!!

zerocrossing wrote: Fri Nov 07, 2025 5:27 pm There are really too many to speak of, and other threads that have gone into them. Before you go buy something, check out what comes with your DAW. For example, I use Bitwig, and its delays and reverbs have the ability to add plugins inside the feedback loop, creating incredible opportunities to sculpt your delay.
I've had Bitwig for a couple of years, and I have never noticed that before!
Someone turned me on to that a while ago, and it was quite a revelation. Make sure you put a limiter after it, because thinks can get out of control pretty easily.
Sound advice. When I first started using this, I assumed it was applying FX simply to the wet signal so I thought I'd make an awesome dub delay with a wobbling resonant band pass filter. This just not the case as I discovered very quickly! Some sort of kill switch would be good here.

It helped me understand what was happening though.

I have to admit, I haven't found a truly useful purpose for it. I'm curious what sort of setups you've stumbled across using the FX chain in the various delays.

A few other notables are objeq delay (physical modelling thingy), modley by Klevgrand (more feedback effects shenanigans), delay cat (concatenator, granular weirdness), indelay (surround capable with tons of taps), daedalus delay (granular with lots of other unusual features), Neold Oldtimer (wonderful sounding delay with a digital or analog character), Other Desert Cities (tons of delay modes and other features like diffusion), wires (Soviet wire recorder based thing with delay capabilities)

Dub delays often have a filter in the feedback. Resonance is usually more than you need especially with something that's perfectly locked to tempo. Using spatializers and modulation effects in the feedback is a good way to add interesting textures in the little spaces in the arrangement. Then there all the very bonkers stuff like throwing a harmonizer in the feedback path, or a spectral gate, or some heavy duty distortion (be sure to get your in/ out gain right before you turn up the feedback). One can very quick get into the realm of making new loops and massive pads that can be the basis for entire compositions. Lots of fun to be had. With the reverb "tank insert" I've found adding a delay can give a cool hybrid of "short" reverb that goes on for a long time.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

Another delay I like a lot is Strum from lese.io Though it doesn't look like a delay, I use Recurse a lot too, another unique delay from them.
