How to achieve this metallic synth sound?

Could somebody pls help me decyfer behind this unique synth sound? Is this FM synthesis combined with upward compression? Or maybe its something spectral? I like how sharp it sounds (although it's a bit extreme). How do I achieve such sharp(turnt up) sounding effect?

I suppose that what you describe as metallic is the "overall sound" of the sequence and I am pretty sure that this sound has been generated by a bad pitch shifting algorithm.

H3000 would be my first take. I mean processing this sampeled "Balkan sequence" with the H3000s pitch shifting algos and so on ...

I suppose that what you describe as metallic is the "overall sound" of the sequence and I am pretty sure that this sound has been generated by a bad pitch shifting algorithm.

HAL76 and The Maestro are apparently right, that was my first thought too but I could not reproduce it (that's why I deleted my comment). You need a really bad pitch shifting and time stretching algorithm from the past to acheive this timbre. It is just a stretched/pitch shifted loop. Modern algos don't produce the same result.

yeah it sounds like a crap MP3 that't been through an FFT wringer. I'm telling you, go mess with the noise removal and centre channel remover/extractor tools in Audition or similar wave editor, you'll hear it straight away.
