Thanks Kevin, this is *super* helpful. White it is for me then! (I also do demo videos and stuff, so having it easy to see played note colours is important.) The big things for me are the y-axis consistency (I can get pretty good movement consistency but less so on initial land and I'd like to turn relative off), but especially orientation. That's especially important to me because I'm trying to teach myself to sight-read and while I said I don't generally have a problem finding the right note horizontally, it would be super helpful to be able to feel for rows tactically, then I'm only guessing along one axis rather than two. (And the indents will make it clear that I've landed mid-point and orient multiple fingers.)

I figure it's worth occasional issues with slide for that gain, and my guess is that with thoughtful technique (like laying finger more flat) one could work around that.

- My favorite of 3 surface options for the LinnStrument 128 is the White Speedbumpy. It provides improved performance while retaining the visual feedback and looks of the original. White is my preference as a player and have purchased several for all of my 128 units.

I have had an opportunity to demo the new "soybean" surface prototype for the 200 note unit and it is fantastic. I plan to use Speedbumpy surfaces on all 5 of my LinnStruments when white 200 note version is available.
Thank you very much for your review of the different types and colours of Speedbump surfaces.

I have just preordered a White 200 Bumpy LinnStrument Surface "Soy Beans" from Sound Workshop for my LinnStrument.
Shipping to the UK was $20 (USD). I'm hoping that customs duties and VAT won't be charged on arrival in the UK.

Sound Workshop are inviting preorders with a 15% discount on their website from now through December 5.
Shipping is planned to be in February 2026.

Thanks for sharing Gromit! Yes I’m ready to start preorders. Two different beta testers gave positive feedback for the smaller grooves (including Kevin earlier in this thread), so I feel good going ahead with that design.

I originally didn’t plan to do preorders, but someone in this thread suggested that it would help me estimate interest and size the production run, which was a good idea. The discount is there to encourage people to order before I kick off production.

PS there only TWO black 128 bumpy surfaces left 😬

Here’s a quick video of the new bumps in action

Very nice, Chris!

I have to ask, why is the black version so much more expensive on the 200?
And I can't tell by the pictures, but is the white surface as tall bump wise as the black version?

Post

Reasonable question. The white color comes straight from the molded silicone. The black color is an additional paint layer applied after molding, before the low friction coating. The black parts cost about 70% more due to the extra paint material, handling, and paint fixture.

Chris thanks, it's just so hard to tell height on the white pictures. And that totally makes sense, that's a lot more labor/production to deal with. I'm still on the fence, the black does look pretty sharp visually.

Great stuff, looking forward to trying it out!

I was just preordering a 200 bumpy-surface about 15 minutes ago, clicked "Pay" and then it told me, that the price has just changed 🥴.
Is is still possible to get the reduced preorder-price? Didn't find any contact-adress on your website @Tigerbalm.

@schluppy oops awkward timing! I just turned the sale prices back on, please go ahead and order

The motivation for the sale price was to thank people who jumped in before I kicked off production, which I just did today! But just to make sure there's no hard feelings I'll leave the sale price on until Wednesday, Dec 10. Then it will go back to the normal price moving forward.

I'm happy and sorry to say that Black 128 surfaces sold out! It will be a while before we make more, need to accumulate enough interest to place an order. I added a waitlist to the product page, please add your email if you're interested.

Still about 25 white 128 surfaces left.

Glad I got my black surface ... looks great with my keyboards.

(Love my white speedbumpys too!)
