in general i miss information about what type of presets are in the expansions like ReFX does. Also does Nexus has cinematic expansions that are in the same ballpark as Omnisphere 3?
Maybe these sound libraries for Avenger are of your liking, currently on sale.
Thank you!

How do you set Avenger to mono...mono retrigger... mono legato???

Do you have to do it on each OSC and the Pitch envelope section??
Update:

Yes, monophonic re-triggered low/high note priority can be done correctly with multi-oscillator presets. However the strange voice stealing of Avenger is still a problem when you want to artificially limit the polyphony of polyphonic patches.

You can not limit a preset with 5 oscillators into a consistent 3 note polyphony as the only option in the main polyphony dropdown is 16. Thus you'll always end up with 3 notes + 1 note that triggers the highest oscillator number (oscillators are treated in decending order priority, from highest number to lowest).

I've also noticed that even if you divide by an even number, and force one oscillator to be silent (a workaround for the 3 osc patch example above), it doesn't always reliably trigger everything.

So in conclusion:

Voice stealing in VPS Avenger is not exactly good. It's weird, temperamental and quirky. Hopefully this can be updated at some point so that it works 100% reliably in all cases. A simple option of having polyphony work as most other synthesizers on the planet, would be very welcome.

EDIT:

If you want as reliable re-triggering of limited amount of voices, do NOT create your "most important and obvious" sound on oscillator 1 as it has the lowest priority. Instead start every preset with a bunch of dummy voices. So if you have a 3 oscillator preset, insert at least 6 oscillators and make sure the osc 6, the last one, is your most important "voice" in the preset. Then once the preset is finished you can delete the dummy oscillators when they are not needed. This way you get a lot of flexibility in how the polyphony ceiling is hit and in what order the voice stealing of oscillators happens.

It's unfortunate that it's in decending order and one needs to do these kinds of workarounds.

And I need to add something positive as well.. man this synthesizer and the depth it has is just incredible. Haven't used it in a long time and while having a free morning and trying to avoid GAS and the Absynth update, I decided to revisit Avenger. It's ridiculous how good this thing is. The possibilities and the complex routing and modulation system is just *Chef's kiss*

I mean, how can you not love this sound?

Thick and Gooey (Google Drive, mp3)

The amount of control you get over nuances, phase relationships between oscillators etc is just astounding. Thus "how analogue" it sounds is completely up to the sound designer. There are no real limitations here as far as I can tell.

This patch is just a simple 2 oscillator thing with manipulated saw waves with subtle amounts of noise and a filter sweep. Yet the mod matrix is filled with 54 destinations. :hihi:

75% of which are squarely doing very subtle manipulations of things depending on the velocity, keyboard position and modwheel/aftertouch. Yet I think it shows in the 3D image and how well it all blends together even in the very dense passage around the 1min mark where I fully open the modwheel and unleash the vibrato.

Mind you, this is coming straight out of VPS Avenger, with only a single Quantum as a simple delay.

^ Awesome sound! Yes, Avenger is a beast and when you know how it works it's pretty easy and fast to create the sound you want. Is that you playing the keyboard? If yes, then you're a very good keyboardist. Wish I could play like that instead of using a mouse to put squares in a grid! lol

Post

Yeah it was free playing.. and no, I'm not at all a great keyboard player lol! That's just a basic minor scale, one of the most comfortable ones you can play, b-minor.. aka the bM scale. :hihi:

awesome, this one i need to get!

side question, why has Avenger so many presets with samples? kinda disappointed why the synth engines arent used or is it not possible to do specific leads etc with it? e.g. also this pack has even for leads samples!

Vengeance Sound has a long history of sample work, I believe

good multisamples (especially from vintage analog synths or real instruments like guitars etc) are an essential part of Avenger. You can mangle samples in very different ways INSIDE the engine. So why this should be bad as an OSC source? Whole libraries (Kontakt etc) are purely made of (plain) samples - what we dont do: each expansion has a reasonable balance between samples, native oscs and other synthesis forms.

thanks a lot!
i love to check how presets/a sound was made so samples are mostly not helpful, i understand that guitars, pianos etc. are not replicatable ;).
but e.g. stuff like this:

a Hooverator Lead

does this really need samples? I saw tutorials on youtube re-creating Hoovers and im no synth pro but they sounded pretty authentic in Serum etc. so I thought Avenger can do it too but again im not writing out to annoy/hate on that but try to understand for myself when creating my own presets why samples were used for such a "simpler" sound :). and this preset is 1 OSC.
