Now the DiscoDSP "legacy version" (2.x, not their commercial 3.x) is completely free, no more strings attached :D
Not that we care, since we did a number of things differently, and refactored a lot of the codebase along the way. So, things are in a much healthier place now, that allow for more good things to come after 1.0.

You basically get all the features hidden as automation parameters only in OB-Xd 2.x (which cost money to get with OB-Xd 3.x) brought to the front, and some features OB-Xd does not have.

With a better vibe :tu:

I love using this synth...

I had a few Oberheims back in the day, including a couple of rather delicious OB8's and when I'm dialling up sounds on the OB-Xf,it 's a trip down memory lane...

It sounds like a classic Oberheim to me...

A few of those analog synths used the same CEM voice chips, but the filter on the OB's was really distinctive....

Surge XT has become one of my main workhorses and OB-Xf has joined it in the first call department

My deepest gratitude and appreciation goes out to all of the guys in the team who have kept these beautiful creations alive and have brought new features and an incredibly positive vibe to the party 🙏

The menus etc don't scale on macOS either. Less of a problem there for me since things are already legible. macOS isn't zoomed because it's not a high-PPI display.
The next nightly the menu will scale with the os scale but not the plugin scale - this made the menus scale the same was as other applications (Firefox clion terminal) I tested on this Ubuntu 24 system

So for your 200% os case that should result in menus which look like other os apps

It’s not impossible to add an either-or behavior (scale with os or scale with os *’plugin) but we are really trying hard to avoid optionitis here

As I mentioned depending on your daw the daw may not tell the vst3 the scale factor. Bitwig should be fine though

How original

Post

Two quick questions:

- when do you expect to release a stable version?
- what is "missing" compared to discoDSP's 3.x version?

Post

Hopefully by the end of year, we'll see!

I'm not sure if anything is missing from OB-Xd 3.x, apart from patch management being different, and patches not being compatible (due to certain parameters changing their scaling and ranges, for consistency reasons). We have improved on almost every aspect of the original codebase, and included some features that 3.x doesn't have at all.

Post

Trying this now, latest nightly build - some of the menus aren't responding to the mouse here on Mac AU - eg I click Menu or Browse, and the menu comes up, but the selection doesn't change as I mouse over the menu items. I have to navigate the menus using the keyboard to activate a menu option, for those two menus. The other menus in the synth, such as Note Priority, do work with the mouse as expected.

When I switch the to the vector skin, the Menu and Browse buttons don't bring up their menus at all (so I can't revert the skin change either.) This seems to happen every time after a skin change - those menus don't open at all. They are back to opening after reloading the plugin.

Is this a known issue?

Also - great job on this! :tu:

I'm seeing that too (Logic AU).

OK I can confirm that, it looks to be caused by the latest commit. The nightly before the current one seems to work fine for menus.

I was curious so I compared and OB-Xd 3 has a completely rewritten engine with some SIMD thing that processes multiple voices at once, better oscillators, polyphonic unison, hardware-accurate modeling and self-oscillating filters. They rebuilt it from scratch with loads of new features.

Meanwhile, you lot are running the 2013 code - your own repo says "continuation of version 2.11." So that's the old engine, one voice at a time, with forced 2x oversampling eating CPU.

So... you've taken decade-old code, added a handful of features that aren't exactly groundbreaking (second LFO, noise modes, independent pitch bends - lovely, but hardly revolutionary), given it a new coat of paint with UI improvements, broken backwards compatibility without providing a converter, and you're genuinely claiming you've "improved almost every aspect" compared to OB-Xd 3? That's either monumentally ignorant or monumentally arrogant, and I'm not sure which is worse.
