Windows 10 with virtual machine in Windows 11

Hey guys, another question here, in the market for a new PC.
Because all my software is pretty old (no judgement please ), I'm considering getting a Windows 11 PC, and then running a virtual machine with Windows 10 so I can run my software. Would this work reliably? Anyone tried this successfully? Are there too many potential issues?

Here's the software I use:
Cubase 6,
East West Play (EWQLSO, Choirs, MOR, RA, Silk, Hollywood Strings)
VSL (Vienna Instruments engine from around 2015)
Best Service Engine (Tarilonte's original ERA, Forest Kingdom)
Kontakt (Embertone solo strings, Tarilonte's Mystica, Cantus)
Toontrack (EZ Drums, EZ Mix)
Ozone 7

I am not aware of software that runs in W10 but not in W11.

You also need a separate audio interface for the VM, on passthrough. The normal hypervisor sound integration has too much lag.

Presumably budget, Win 11 machines are what’s available, and the poster assumes their software will have issues running on Windows 11.

OP - Most (if not all) of that software should run ok natively on Windows 11. The biggest risk is Cubase, since it’s reliant on driver level code (eLicenser) for its copy protection. But the most recent eLicenser driver isn’t that old, so even that should be fine.

Virtual machines will work, but can be prone to additional latency for various reasons. Which is, obviously, something which impacts real-time audio more than just about any other use case. So you’d want to avoid using a VM where possible..

Thanks guys. Yeah, budget is a concern in this situation. But also, there are some VST libraries I love to use that do not run on Windows 11 (older best service engine). Nevertheless, looks like I'll just have to go ahead and settle for Windows 11. Best.

Is this an established truth, or how vendors specify requirements?

Vendors specify like this out of convenience mostly, not having to take support issues with older systems.
- they often specify a certain service pack as well for the same reason


- "so you have a problem on system xx, we don't support that!" scape goat

And there are some compatibility settings you can run software under.

I bought at the time Yellow Tools Independent sampler at Best Service, later aquired by Magix, but it runs fine on Windows 11.
- maybe you refer to some specific software engine I am not aware of though

I run Sonar Artist, updated 10 years ago, on Windows 11 as well.

I'm not aware of any VSTs that run on Windows 10, but not Windows 11. Folks generally expect that when they do an in-place upgrade of the PC to 11, the VSTs continue working.
