What hardware are you missing in software?

Thanks Fox. I didn't realize Halion 7 (which I have) was considered a Motif emulation. With everything in it, it's hard to really tell what it is. LOL

Fair shout on the Iridium, wavetable engines can be proper tricky to replicate in software.
For me, it's the Sequential Prophet VS. Arturia's had a crack at it, and whilst it's decent enough, there's something about the crossfading on the original hardware that I'm not entirely convinced software's nailed yet. Those Curtis filters working with the digital oscillators had quite a particular character.
Bit niche, I suppose.

Why would a digital synth be difficult to replicate with software? you have Serum, Avenger, Multi/Poly, etc. Unless we want to be extra picky and say “oh, but it’s not the same because the Iridium is like this, the Iridium is like that…”soniccraft wrote: Sun Dec 14, 2025 11:11 am Fair shout on the Iridium, wavetable engines can be proper tricky to replicate in software.

Korg MonoPoly was recently updated (Collection 6) - plus the "Multi/Poly" is the spiritual successor. Then there is also the "Full Bucket" version.
"Waldorf Iridium" is a bit of a special case. Not so much that there are not proper wavetable synths existing (like... there are darn plenty!). It's the behavior of their ENV (filter and amp) that is what makes Waldorf special (the devs explained this in their "Microwave" product/comparison video - there a technical limitation/bug turned into their signature feature). And the bundled wavetables/sample content of course.
If the Arturia version of the Sequential "Prophet VS" is not working for (some of) you (like... there is a lot of Arturia nay-saying in here!
), then there is also the "Vector Bundle" for Cherry Audio's Voltage Modular. Voltage Modular Nucleus is free, Ignite and Core on sale a lot. The Vector Bundle goes for 39 USD and there are regular sales as well.
Or... hunt down an old copy of "General Vibe VectorSector" (which was made by Joshua Jeffe, one of the developers of the Prophet VS).
Or... Korg again... the "Wavestation" was developed by some of the Prophet VS developers as well.
If you want to go more experimental - then VCV Rack has some modules. Like NYSTHI VectorMixer, Hora Detour Free. These modules are not in DISTHRO Cardinal however.

_2025:
1. Electrix Repeater alike:
a Good and VERY SIMPEL to operate Looper "as a plugin" -> Which has nifty Attack detection vs. your fresh recording. And which adds in _it´s: 2025+ also a "auto created- 2nd stereo track" per each recordet track => used to fold "the release" of a sound back onto the loop. ie. longer recording times than you really press + some menu points. (think Delay, Reverb Tails, etc. )
Don´t at First: look we have this and that and some more for your next "bullshit ambience music performance" features (no pun intended). First, bevore anything else: super simpel operation of basic looping ! BUT: with attack detection...and shifting of the file into position
2. Qu-Bit Nebulae (Eurorack) creative sampler).
PLEASE bring this, or "this functionality, to Plugin.....well, to VCV Rack world.
It´s imperfection in how it operates the sound, it´s smearing is gold worth. It´s manual Jam capabilities are beyond anything i´ve ever seen elsewhere. The Sounds it can create are totally, i mean TOTALLY unheard. ("manual" means: "manual" + sequening and modulations, so VCV would be ideal)

As on owner of a Montage M, and the plugin, honestly just get a copy of HALion7 and call it a dayD-Fusion wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 3:26 pm Right now there is very little I am interested in from the Past Since i have the sounds that i have been interested in from various HW companies and other companies in vst form.
My only wish is that We will get the Soon to be Released Mod-X As a Vst for the masses or the that they sell us the Montage Vst for everyone..
I don't need it but i would buy it if i could![]()
If the Mod-X plugin is anything like the Montage Plugin it just doesn't translate all that well from a user perspective to the software. It sounds good but it's clunky to use as it's to beholden to the hardware UI
HALion7 actually has a an expanded FM-X engine over Montage, and it's sample engine has an extremely versatile library and is both very robust and designed to be a plugin
What would be awesome would be if Steinberg would make an AWM2 plugin that is not tied to Yamaha hardware like they did with the FM-X engine that they ported over from Montage

I'm sure someone's already said it but the AN1x. I never got to play one but decades ago had a Best Service sample CD (Gigasampler I think) of it. I had lots of sample CDs but the ANX1 had a particular sound on the filter that none of the others had.

Any talkbox, like the Rocktron Banshee. Tough to make in a virtual format since it requires a physical cavity (your mouth / head). For me vocoders are not always a suitable substitute.

A couple of things of note:
HALion 7's "sample layer" with the stock samples is AWM2... because the source material legit comes from those devices, and you can do a crap-ton of shenanigans going from there (just the GM set alone). AMW2 is bog standard "Sample-Based Synthesis", not wavetables or something "magical".
No "port" of the Yamaha AN1x exists, but plenty of plugins that can do similar filter shenanigans (non resonant high pass, and a regular resonant multi-mode filter), including feedback routing. e.g. FabFilter Volcano, SoundToys FilterFreak (especially in combination with the EffectRack's "Recycle" knob which is basically a "feedback" knob), Hyakken HY-Filter4 and of course U-HE Filterscape.
Rocktron Banshee - not a "port", but there are Talkbox VST plugins. MDA Talkbox is still floating around, Antares has the Avox Articulator, Waves has OVOX, iZotope has a Talkbox module in VocalSynth2, and the fairly new kid on the block is "Blezz Beats Vocodine".
If that is not satisfactory enough... then you have to stick to the old "tube chewing"
Qu-Bit Nebulae - VCV Rack modules to look at (maybe): NYSTHI Simpliciter or Path Set x Omri Cohen Panther Cap or Sanguine Mutants Nebulae, combined with Audible Instruments Texture Synthesizer or Grayscale Supercell. Maybe... plenty of options in VCV Rack, and taking a dive at Omri Cohen's Youtube videos is worth a shot as well.

Tell us you have never touched the AWM2 engine inside of Montage without telling us you have never touched the AWM2 engine inside of MontageCompyfox wrote: Mon Dec 15, 2025 1:53 am A couple of things of note:

AWM2 allows for 128 complex "Elements" per part. Having 128 per Part allows for incredibly detailed, layered sounds (like a piano with multiple articulations), Each Element has its own filters, envelopes (pitch, amplitude), EQ, and LFO. It relies heavily on highly optimized, proprietary compression and hardware DSP to have massive polyphony of 400 notes total with near-zero latency
To say that's what's inside of HALion7 is just wrong. HALion7 has a really good sample engine for sure, but it's not AWM2. The sampling engine inside of HALion7 is more powerful for experimental sound design, whereas AWM2 is optimized for performance and ready-to-play acoustic emulation
Montage M also comes with a massive 10GB sample library which is entirely different than what's inside of HALion7
The Yamaha ESP Montage plugin released for Montage M owners contains the actual binary code of the Montage M engines (AWM2, FM-X, and AN-X), it's running an emulator of the custom Yamaha ASICs. That is not occuring inside of HALion7
