SQUID-3 is a forward-thinking synthesizer born from Acustica’s groundbreaking MAREA series, available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. Built to respond better than a real instrument, SQUID-3 gives you the speed to create instantly, and the depth to design without limits. It’s fluid, focused, and sonically honest.

SQUID-3 is not another virtual synth.

It’s a new breed - designed to sound finished, even before the FX. Every stage of its engine, from oscillator to output, was built to make raw synthesis sound like a mastered record.

You don’t need make-up when the sound is this good.

This isn’t a vintage emulation, or a collection of pretty presets under reverb.
SQUID-3 fuses algorithmic modeling with advanced convolution, capturing the behavior of analog gear - better than gear does.

Two separate GUI editions: Standard and Flat

SQUID-3 is available in two separate editions:

• the Standard (3-D, multi-page) edition, hardware-inspired interface with depth, lighting, and tactile realism for an immersive studio feel.
• a Flat (2-D version, single-page) edition, A clean, flat design optimized for speed, built for maximum graphic efficiency, where all controls are summarized on a single page

Key Features

• Superstereo - Analog drift so real, it creates stereo depth by itself
• Berserkr - Continuously tilt from vintage roll-off to full modern clarity.
• Up-Rate Wave Morphing (UPRM) - True audio-rate, oversampled waveform morphing with consistent detail and stability under fast, complex modulation.
• Return - Pre-filter feedback adds thickness before the filter sculpts the tone.
• Drive - Post-filter drive - polyphonic, analog-like tone with no extra FX needed.
• Precision - Sample-accurate event and modulation timing.
• Saturation - Realistic saturation with ultra-low aliasing.
• Full MPE - True per-note expression with pitch, pressure, and timbre control.
• Studio FX - Mastering-grade FX unit including shimmer, reverbs, chorus, delays, distortion, OTT, and EQ.
• Modulation - Audio-rate and oversample-rate modulation.
• Morphing - New morph synthesis operating at upsampled/oversampled rates.
• Oversampling - FIR-based oversampling also supported.
• Workflow - Multi-page layout gives deep access to synthesis, modulation, and FX—while the flat interface keeps CPU low and editing fast.
• Engine - MUST Hybrid Engine: analog-style modeling fused with convolution.
• 350+ Pro Presets - Curated by sound designers, producers, and musicians.

About the Technology (MUST)

At its core lies MUST (Modular Unified Synthesis Technology), Acustica’s proprietary engine designed to deliver ultra-low latency, efficient CPU usage, and pristine audio quality. This cutting-edge architecture ensures that SQUID-3 delivers not just authenticity, but also the reliability and flexibility demanded by today's music producers and sound designers.

Is this sample-based? If not, do you have any other synths that are also not sample-based?

No. SQUID-3 (like our other synths ALICE-9, Expanse-5 / XP-5, and THING) is not sample-based. They are all real-time synthesis instruments.

Post

In your previous threads, you stated that THING is sample-based.

Sounds pretty generic, old timey analogue to me. Don't like the sound of it really. The Thing8 is great, for me every Acusitca synth released subsequent to that has been disappointing.
For gear emulation heads, maybe of interest, but the last thing I'd need in my vst folder to make actual music. I have synths I prefer over this that I already don't use.

Jmo ofc. no shade meant, I'm only being honest. Don't mean to dissuade others from checking this out.

The download was 889MB, which is normal for an Acustica convolution plugin and a lot smaller than the THING installer. I also didn't find any audio files in the Aquarius Stagearea. Based on this limited information, it does not seem to be sample-based.

I never got a clear answer from Acuistica in the GS threads on THING et al. what their synthesis method actually is if not based on a sample (sort of like a wavetable instead of DSP). Instead they keep repeating the same hyperbolic vague marketing speak to point to their way of sound generation without ever clearly pointing out the what and how. You'd think it wouldn't be such a problem to answer such a straightforward question..

"At its core lies MUST (Modular Unified Synthesis Technology)"

Yeah, no-one knows..

Sorry to be such a cynic, but I've grown skeptical of this company and it's opauge practices.

Brilliant

I really like THING, but then I tried Expanse and it didn't seem like there was enough difference between the two to justify owning both. Also, THING has had a long-standing voice stealing bug that hasn't been fixed yet, AFAIK.

So, my ardor for SQUID is significantly dampened.
A well-behaved signature.

Sounds like the real deal, with more lfo envelopes :)
But i am missing the big lfo source mod knobs

Thing8 is on every song I do for a while now. XP5 also a close second and indeed interchangeable but not always with thing8.

Still, so far, best emulation on the market.

Alice 9 was disapointing, I never reach for it.

They all use synthesis except ALICE-9, which uses a hybrid approach (based on samples and synthesis). Sorry for the mistake.

Update available! SQUID - rel. A021 / SQUID (trial) - rel. A003:
  • Fixed "Sync BPM" mode: now the arpeggiator only retriggers when pressing new keys, not according to the internal clock. Same thing happens with the EG when in "SYNC" mode, and for the LFO when both "SYNC" and "KEY SYNC" are enabled.
  • Fixed FLT EG skipping the delay phase when pressing a new note while an old one was still in release phase.
  • Fixed keyboard graphics glitch issue
  • Fixed some presets
