Originally it was largely about the melt feature and getting that old unstable, warbly sound really easily (per voice, not just an effect over the whole signal. Phonec did it before other synths started adding things like "age" and instability, which now you see in roland, arturia and others. Phonec was like the Boards of Canada synth.

One thing I always appreciated though was that you could also use it as an effect for other things.

Didn't realise there was an FX version - hope v3 has that too

It's been a while since i had it installed but I don't remember if there was a separate fx version, or if it's just that the synth could have an external input. I was using Bitwig at the time and adding a second instrument after the first is just as easy as an effect so I don't remember.

I want to say you're referring to VectoMelt - which really expands on and enhances the Melt parameter and is a cool multi effect.

If there's an input for Phonec I've been unaware of it all these years!

It is. The dev said it's inspired by music from video logos and public information films of the 1980s and somehow he managed to nail that sound. Not just with a wobbly tape effect but with its innate character. It can produce a beautiful instability that I can't reproduce in other synths, but it can do bread and butter stuff just fine too.

My only real nitpick is the non-legato mono behaviour is quite jarring, with an audible gap between notes. Maybe that was a stylistic choice and part of its character.
I bought vectomelt because of phonec.

The secret sauce they have for pitch instability is the best I've come across.

No, before any of those effects were released, phonec itself could be used for the melt effect.

$10 pre-order upgrade price. That's an offer I can't refuse! :borg:

(I just re-watched The Godfather trilogy...)

I am a longtime owner of this. I haven't seen any emails about it.

I got the announcement emails but no upgrade offer yet.

Contact the dev via the contact link.

I didn't receive an Email so I contacted them with proof of purchase of Phonec 2 and they hooked me up with the 10 dollar upgrade.

Thanks. Gonna try that now.

In V2 it was this "EXT" input shown here that allowed an external signal to be be processed through it's signal path.

i don't see that in the new image posted in the OP. I hope it can still process external signals! Maybe the dev can confirm.

Yeah I hadn't gotten the upgrade email either but once I contacted the dev he sent it. Definitely email him about it.

Any chance of Linux native, dev? :) ‘26 is looking like the year of the Linux desktop, so it might be worth your while.

I do also have a personal reason for asking (just switched from Win10 to Linux). Would love to see it happen. I’ve already preordered the update, btw - so yeah, I’ll just use Wine, etc., if need be.
