VOS Density (III) is a very nice one on a drum bus, or if you need to excite peaks out from the waveform like The Glue. I used to use them in all techno tracks. Density does have its own nice character and one must pay attention to the small screws between the large knobs

Each compressor shine with it's own character.legendCNCD wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:21 am VOS Density (III) is a very nice one on a drum bus, or if you need to excite peaks out from the waveform like The Glue. Made fast experiment on same track test 3 valve/tube comps against 1 non tube and valve drive doesn't work everywhere - the artificial digital harshness is audible if push it harder.
If i have to make compromise, using only one valve comp, the choice will be SSL Valve comp, because translate well on small speakers.
Different instruments need specific compressors,so to fit properly inside the mix space.
One compressor can't do all the tasks same way 7-8 different will do.
The less isn't more, the more is more
Cheers

I've been using the Artuia _COMP plugins a lot lately, especially the FET-76.

Analog Obsession FetCB is a pretty unique compressor. It's one of the few comps I haven't been able to closely mimic with TB Impress.
It does this weird 'dancy' thing on plucky sounds like guitars, arps, etc. that I've not seen any other compressor imitate. It's almost like the reduction and release 'overshoots' in a musical way. Definitely more of a narrow use case type of compressor, not one that works on everything. Worth a try if you want some bouncy/springy type of gain reduction.
The saturation in MJUC is pretty unique as well.

Unfortunately plenty of aliasing. Which is really weird considering how low the aliasing in the Nasty Series was. Maybe it gets fixed in mark IV?

Technically every compressor become color/dirty,if put a preamp/saturator before it in the fx chain, but i am trilled mostly of these comps, which had the character build in as behavior listener could hear n feel immediately.
To me best example is Vertigo VSC2 - had no idea what is so special about this thing when bought it,super simple interface and control, price 19,99eu,nothing extraordinary, but once a man hear it in action,it's so addictive, makes you look for more like it:):):)
It's all about taste i guess, but i have few stuff from tone empire i like because of it too - Model 5000 have such sweet character,if use right settings, it's audible sweetness.
Some stuff like console emulators have wrong order of fx like compressor before eq - correct me ,if you think i am wrong, but to my taste eq works better before comp,so with consoles only minimum compression, basically i use them as saturator/eq or have to put two instances so to use second with more compression...
My basix ordering fx is saturator - eq - compressor, which could be doubled with another type of same and to put like 6-7 fx ,but following same order.
Sometimes 2-3 different saturators,1 eq and 1 comp are ok,other time 1 saturator 2 eq and 2 comps do better job.
It all depend of raw material character, which gives direction of what fx need to be used.
Cheers.

Not much aliasing when its not pushed to extreme, I only compress a bit, and the people dancing did not seem to mindZeisner wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:13 pmUnfortunately plenty of aliasing. As a simple peasant i'm gonna try it on a 3layers techno-edm-ish kick.legendCNCD wrote: Wed Dec 24, 2025 1:34 pmNot much aliasing when its not pushed to extreme, I only compress a bit, and the people dancing did not seem to mindZeisner wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:13 pmUnfortunately plenty of aliasing. Neither are Voxengo (especially Marquis is an outright crime to overlook) and Korneff's Pawn Shop, so get in line.planet_b wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 8:03 pm We're talking about colorful compressors and Kush Audio is not mentioned yet? :O
Novatron, AR1, Silika, UBK all very much adding some juicy flavors.

Plugin Alliance Opticom XLA-3 is probably the dirtiest, but the aliasing is so high, that it is not usable. I saw a video with Luke Slater using it in the studio for 909 kicks, but that was hardware.

Royal compressor for sure. Saturation set to 100 and blend to taste.

I get nice results with Tone Projects Unisum. It has good control over various sound colouring parameters while remaining smooth and sweet.
