No it's far from that. A bunch of code is tied up in NI's homebrew libraries and toolkits that are never going to leave the company. If you strip all that out you don't have a buildable codebase, so there's nothing to work on for the open source community.sunthief01 wrote: Sun Dec 28, 2025 12:44 am Re: Open Source being off the table even if development is fully abandoned, which parts of Reaktor are the IP concern? Core and Primary themselves?

Well there we go. If that's a way to avoid 5 years, fantastic. Add a proper browser and put Reaktor 7 in Komplete 15 in September.EvilDragon wrote: Sun Dec 28, 2025 8:28 amYes, KUI would be used to give ensembles a HiDPI supported look and feel. Which is a pretty big deal in and of itself really, since it tackles the biggest end user usability pain point basically.machinesworking wrote: Sat Dec 27, 2025 11:03 pm You're insinuating that Reaktor could live on in a Komplete UI? I mean I get it in terms of NI using Reaktor to make PLAY style instruments with limited interaction etc. with Reaktor internals, but that just makes Reaktor an internal development environment to a degree which it was anyway wasn't it? Doesn't do much for the third party people making ensembles except give them a modern interface to code for.
I'll take your word for it on AI coding. I know it routinely performs miracles today, but I have no first hand knowledge. I do have first hand knowledge of ChatGPT, and I know that its miracles come bundled with extreme psychosis and gaslighting...

Now we just need KUI to adopt an object oriented programming UI!EvilDragon wrote: Sun Dec 28, 2025 8:28 amYes, KUI would be used to give ensembles a HiDPI supported look and feel. (or just more improvements to the tagging system)

I'm one of those people who quit using Reaktor and other NI legacy products solely due to the itty bitty fonts as my eyes get not-younger. I'd pay money just for a UI update!
The super annoying thing is - When NI founders were still around, they understood the value of Reaktor as a DSP prototyping tool, and ecosystem for Ensembles. But then the suits came in...

I dont think your eyes are getting older/worse, you just write in tiny font size. Like really small. Im gaving hard time reading what you wrote, i have to zoom in.Winstontaneous wrote: Sun Dec 28, 2025 10:51 am I'm one of those people who quit using Reaktor and other NI legacy products solely due to the itty bitty fonts as my eyes get not-younger. As deep as Reaktor is, I don't care if they never do another thing with it. If I spent 20 years with it, I still wouldn't learn every single thing I could do with it.

I wonder if the open source community [cough, Surge Team, cough, cough] could build a modern Reaktor alternative. One that maybe starts out with some basic building blocks that can be added to over time. Example: ChowDSP's BYOD is open source, has a few different distortion blocks, filters, etc., you wire them up, and you make a distortion pedal. It's got the wiring. It's zoomable. It's modern. Could that, a fork, or something like that, have dozens and dozens of modules added to it to create a Reaktor-like alternative?

That'd take 10+ years xD
Plus SST is not really interested in doing anything close to that.

Well, there's a lot of exciting stuff that's free and open source and can compete with Reaktor
PlugData ports PD into a VST, is fully tbemeable and resizable, already has a better browser, and now has a user librarg
https://plugdata.org/
Cardinal is the Open Source fork of VCV Rack
https://cardinal.kx.studio/
I personally support both devs / teams because these tools are amazing and are being actively worked on.
If NI decides to reinvest in Reaktor, some of us might be interested in subscribing - not to own the project, but to support it having a future
That would take leadership and some kind of vision for where Reaktor wants to go

Let Reaktor die. Use PlugData.

PlugData is surely very interesting and does have a thriving, creative community. Still not really a new Reaktor for me, though. https://gumroad.com/discover?query=plugdata

I would buy a reaktor 7 update if all they did was overhaul the browser and preset management system.
