So why is there a plugin version of it? Why have a vst if we need to own the actual synth? Seems kind of pointless really. as an example, I own an emulator, why would I need a VST version of it?

Because some day, the DSP chips on the actual hardware will stop working, but the emulator will be there to pick the slack right up.

We can talk now I guess. I do like this. It has a much rougher sound than the Virus. Midi and all aside, I know Channel 3 activates the arp, but what I love is being able to put it in Multi mode, setting both Midi Channels the same, then dragging and dropping a preset into the list and combining sounds.

How does "Control Assign" work?

Same as velocity assign. Click the button, the controls change colour and now become modulation amounts for that parameter. Change what you want to control, either positive or negatively, then click the button again to come out of assign mode.

Best thing if you're not up on the hardware behaviour is to read the manual to get familiar with how it works. This controller is the onboard ribbon controller, and it responds to aftertouch via MIDI by default iirc, so whatever settings you make will respond accordingly to channel aftertouch.

I think he's just reminding people of the legal implications of using this without owning the hardware. Whatever mental gymnastics people choose to do to allow themselves the right to grab the ROMS from an archive source and load it up is not what the makers of this emulator were aiming for. The point is if you have the hardware you can then have a like for like, minus AD/DA in some cases, to load up much easier in your projects. Will many people get it that don't have the hardware, sure, but let's not kid ourselves on it being a moral debate. It's a legal one.

Roland allows you to download it from them directly and grants a license to so in the process, there is no qualifications to owning any hardware in that licence, they freely grant it to anyone who downloads it
