I hit all sorts of hiccups and didn't finish in time. It's technically late, so I assume a DQ. But I spent way too much time fooling around with Oxid not to share SOMETHING :) Feel free to take a listen:
https://soundcloud.com/aarongrooves/oxi-nova

This is the story of a guy who wants to escape the cold, northern winter by flying to sunny Brasil, told in three parts:
1. Take Flight
2. Cabin Music a.k.a. "Oxi Nova"
3. Samba!

I initially had 5 parts, but I narrowed it down for the sake of time.

Percussion was a challenge, but I'm very proud of what I ended up with. Huge thanks to all the incredible sound designers for teaching me that multi-note-stacking trick. It gave birth to a fun tamborim & surdo, which inspired the whole samba section.

Instruments:
20x CLAPi: Oxid (Full Bucket Music)

Reaper Effects:
1x JS: MIDI CC inverter
8x JS: MIDI convert to CC
8x VST: ReaEQ (Cockos)
1x JS: Master Limiter

3rd Party Effects:
10x VST3: Wider (Polyverse Music)
2x VST3: OTT (Xfer Records)
1x VST: Acon Digital Reverb SOLO (Acon Digital)
3x VST3: ValhallaSupermassive (Valhalla DSP, LLC)

My technical hiccups:
For some reason, each render had dropped audio and .1 sec silences. Never experienced this before. Took a few hours, but I finally got a render with no drops. Then soundcloud was giving me a "180 minutes remaining" upload time, and it got stuck on "3 min of 180 minutes" for about 15 minutes. Whenever I tried to cancel, I was immediately taken to a checkout page to purchase Artist Pro. I eventually figured it out, but good grief! :ud: On the positive, I still learned a ton, and I'm getting faster. I'll eventually finish a track on time lol.

Sorry, am I too late?

The two late entries are included in the list but will be dq

Voted. Might give it a second pass to flatten the curve. There was more variation in style and flavor than I expected, and that's nice to see.

Haha no worries. For clarification, should DQ peeps still vote? I'm not up to 40 posts yet, so I believe...no? Either way is fine, just want to respect the rules:))

Thanks
P.S. Still listening to all the tracks. Great stuff y'all!

Sorry you were unable to submit your entry in time. :(
You are correct that without a qualifying entry and less than 40 posts, according to the rules, your vote will not be counted. I am sure however, that your listens and comments will be appreciated and respected.

Got it. No prob at all. Thanks again!

That's cool. I kinda knew that was going to be the case. Just happy to listen to these amazing entries.

Done voting. There were lots of wonderful surprises this time, and I thoroughly enjoyed everything that was achieved with this remarkable-sounding, compact and limited synthesiser. This demonstrates how boundless and creative musical talent can be.

Post

Voted! Some really great tracks as usual, thoroughly enjoyed listening to all of them!

Nd6829 wrote: Thu Dec 25, 2025 1:25 pm... I would appreciate any advice on your mixing techniques, how you measure DR (Dynamic Range), and so on.
Youlean Loudness Meter is the typical free tool used to measure dynamic range.

As far as mixing/mastering goes, TDR Nova is great and although a little complicated for beginners, vladg Limiter no6 is still the best free limiter. Those two plugs are almost always on my master channel. Mixing is a lot more about balance between tracks rather than any specific plugins. A famous producer said something to the effect that he could create a better mix than someone else just using the volume fader. And that's largely true: think about what you want the focus to be, it should probably be the loudest. Automate levels. Use EQ to separate frequency overlaps between parts and use high pass filter to remove the low noise in tracks -- any frequencies that aren't part of the main sound are just serving to muddy the mix up. By far one of the most informative things I've read about mixing is this thread on using gain staging (despite being on dubstepforum, it's not exclusive to dubstep).
I'm sorry for the late reply. Thank you so much for the invaluable advice!

I've just installed it. I had no idea something like this existed... it's so convenient.
When I was working on this piece without knowing about it, I was constantly struggling with exporting, clipping (distortion), and making corrections.

I'm still not quite sure how to use it yet, but I'm going to practice.
Thank you very much!

Hello! I only learned about OSC this month. Everyone is incredibly creative !
I love making music. I enjoy listening to various people's creative works and learning more.
My work might not be very easy on your ears (it’s not even a good piece to me), but I look forward to being part of this community !!
I’m going to learn a lot from all of you.
Oh, that's right ! Happy holidays, everyone !!
P.S. Since I don't have much money, I only use free plugins, but I would appreciate any advice on your mixing techniques, how you measure DR (Dynamic Range), and so on.
Also, I’d like to enter various free competitions to grow—which ones do you usually participate in? Sorry for all the questions !

Thank you !
Welcome & congrats on your first entry! I'm pretty new here too (first entry 2 months ago). Amazing community! Super knowledgeable (sometimes intimidatingly so), but also incredibly kind and helpful. There's a strong sense of everyone wanting to help everyone level up, and the passion for sound design is very motivating.

Thanks also for the questions you asked. Mastering is something I've never gotten much into aside from placing a limiter on my final mix. I'm taking notes! 😁

Btw, the discord is very active. If you haven't already, that's a great place to peruse! Just watch your step...rabbit holes abound lol
Thank you for your kind comment ! Everyone here is truly amazing.

It goes without saying that I’m not even on the same level yet, let alone in a position to compare myself to them.

I didn't know about the Discord ! Thank you for the info; I’ll definitely check it out.

Thanks again !

Hi. It's a very, very beautiful composition! I am happy when I hear such music in OSC and hope that you will come in more than once!

In OSC, it's in the order of things and rules to use only free plugins)

At the end of the first post in this and any other OSC monthly KVR forum, there are links to several other competitions. Although you won't find anything better than OSC, I'm sure! :hihi:

Also, as mentioned, the main life of this community is currently taking place on Discord, Z'prime shared the link just a few posts above.

Welcome!
Hi! Thank you for the warm welcome.

I’ll definitely check out the Discord! To be honest, I'm well aware that my tracks is terrible, so I would really appreciate any honest feedback or even harsh advice you might have. Also, thank you for the information about the other competitions. I looked into them, but I agree—OSC seems like the best place for me to grow.

Thank you so much for your comment!
