Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

I'd rather it just asked what you actually use, rather than also what you might use.
The data for lesser used systems will probably be artificially boosted by the votes by people that might possibly use them, which undermines the usefulness.
I think you have mixed together two different polls for no good reason.
It comes across as being biased towards the minority systems.

How so? You don't have to vote for just one thing. You can vote for all that apply. Nothing will be artificially boosted by anything, since each person can vote for every option. There is no bias towards anything.agharta wrote: Fri Jan 02, 2026 8:53 pm I'd rather it just asked what you actually use, rather than also what you might use.

Edit: After giving it some thought. The only way that lesser systems would artificially boost votes, would be if more people would be considering using lesser used systems. But if the questions remain the same year after year, that would balance that out and keep consistency. However, I can see your point too. I'll plan to remove that part in next year's survey. I don't want to start this one over, since it is already going, and since last year's was identical.

Just because I use Linux, doesn't mean I am making a survey biased. I have honed this survey over the last several years, using feedback from people of all walks of life and who use all sorts of different operating systems.
Think about it.... If there was any attempted bias, it would be immediately discredited and would make the whole exercise a waste of time.

Maybe I'll create two different polls next year. But I think what I will most likely do, is just remove the "considering using" part so that there are no questions whatsoever. What OSes are you using? Choose all that apply. It seems useful and removes any ambiguity. Maybe someone else in the future can do a poll on what people are considering using. I'm trying to make this as balanced as possible. Each year improves, and I think your idea is a good one.agharta wrote: Fri Jan 02, 2026 10:58 pm I am interested to see a separate poll just on what people are considering using.

There's also the issue that the wording of the thread title and the actual poll don't match.
The title doesn't even mention the part about what you might be considering using.
Some might read the title and answer just based on that.
I think it's a mess really.
I would consider scrapping it and starting again.
I like the idea of asking people what they are thinking of using.
But to get more useful data, I would ask more nuanced questions.
Are you thinking of using a different system?
1. Definitely.
2. Highly likely.
3. Possibly.
4. Slightly likely.
5. No.
Which new systems are you thinking of adding or changing to?
1. BeOS.
2. CP/M.
Etc

There was less space for the heading than there was for the poll, but it's something that I can correct by leaving out the "thinking of adding or changing to" part next time. It's unfortunate that you feel it's such a mess. I guess I'm glad you never saw the ones I did in the early years. I feel that there has been improvement each year.agharta wrote: Fri Jan 02, 2026 11:11 pm There's also the issue that the wording of the thread title and the actual poll don't match.

"i use linux. what else would i use?"
he's not questioning why linux is in the poll.

It's been that way every year. Don't worry. MacOS and Windows will all get to numbers one would expect in the end.
