What fx do you put on early to mid 2000 VST synths to beef them up?

Why would you want to beef up a vintage sound? Either you want it or you better use an actual new synth which has all the beef already…
I can’t recall anything worthwhile from that time, which wouldn’t have a better replacement from todays options…
That time was full of aliasing, which is rarely welcome and beefing up aliasing doesn’t really solve it…

There were plenty of great sounding synths from that period... The point of ignorance around all this is that they used way less resources, they were targeted for the grim machines back then... Your fancy-ass new synths won't run on that old hardware, so would be considered useless junk back then... They use much greater resources on all levels so they'd better sound great...
So the first Sylenth is 20 years old, I have the first ImpOSCar from G-Media 2004 sounds just as good as current...I have early Vanguard which rocks, I could go on... You can pile FX ontop of solid sounds if you do it right but since these old VSTi use little resource best to have many instances in unison with different patches-settings, there's your frickin' fat sound!
Here in SVArTracker I have 3 instances of Claw into 3 instances of CamelSpace everything custom patched for big sound-

Not stopping there using SVAr's effect processor I assign as many curves to as many params as I want which pack into a 'cell' with a unique command ### then anywhere, anytime I just place that effect ### & all the custom designed curves play thru-

So in this manner much sound, modulation & more important the musical nature of using it is enough to make one's head explode...
So there's the secret, old synths+many instances custom organized still way less resources than 'modern' synths which are not 'special' they just take advantage of dozens of GBs of RAM, 64bit machines & other aspects all wrapped up in a spyware OS...
And worry not, I already had these screens made, I didn't make them custom for here...

That wasn’t a VST, it was a HW synth… And you get it now from the usual suspects…Tubeman wrote: Sun Jan 04, 2026 12:15 amRoland JP-8000?Tj Shredder wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 5:14 pm I can’t recall anything worthwhile from that time, which wouldn’t have a better replacement from todays options…

Beef is beef. What is good for modern synths will be good for older ones. Of course, it’s best to start with the best quality ingredients, so if you don’t like the synthesizer that you’re using, switch to something else. Some of my favorite beeferuppers are the Arturia preamp emulations, any good Universal Audio 1176 compressor emulators (the Arturia one is really good) or a driven tape emulator. Any good saturation can be great, but if the synthesizer is showing a lot of aliasing, it might make it worse. This can be mitigated by putting the saturation on a send and using a steep low pass to reduce the high frequency content into the saturation. If you want to get really fancy, you can use a dynamic EQ like F6 to bring down high frequency audio when it reaches a certain threshold.

I typically use Wavesfactory Spectre to target whatever specific frequency range that needs 'beefed'.
For just broadband beef, the Vertigo VSS-2 does a nice job.

There are lots of different cuts of beef, but the one I like is a Juno-style chorus. I use Hornet's, but TAL has a free one.
