Halion 7 - what bread and butter is included? acoustic upright bass?

I can't find a full instrument list or youtube demo of all the bread and butter instruments included with Halion 7 or Halion 7 Collection.
1. I watched a youtube of Simone playing Halion3 basses and it had acoustic upright bass patches. One patch is called Mello Acoustic Upright?. Does Halion 7 have these upright bass instruments as well? Or are these added with an addon (Absolute?)?
2.Does Steinberg make a high quality upright jazz bass? If so how to include it in Halion 7? They sure make a high quality Electric bass.
3. Does the Halion 7 30 day trial include the full 35gb library?
Also I've determined that Electric Bass instrument is the best sounding of them all. And I've listened to many.
4. Halion 7 does not include Electric Bass? and has to be purchased as an addon instrument?
5. Absolute doesn't included all instruments such as 4Knob Piano? Even though it's called "absolute"?
Thanks

There are a ton of bread and butter sounds in the HALion7 library, including many bass sounds
Steinberg also has a very good demo policy. You get to download everything the entire sample library and use it unrestricted for 30 full days
So your best bet is to try the demo and listen to the individual presets and see if they are going to work for you

Thanks. I was hoping there was audio demo of the instruments included with Halion 7 so I wouldn't have to download the 35gb trial . The Halion info page shows only these instruments are included:IvyBirds wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 4:28 pm There are a ton of bread and butter sounds in the HALion7 library, including many bass sounds

I see two pianos, organ and brass in the list but not basses.
I see Absolute 6 has many pianos, basses, organ, brass, but Absolute 6 is an addon to buy to use in Halion, correct? When you say there are "a ton of bread and butter sounds" are these different from all the Absolute 6 instruments? Or the same instruments?

Halion is a subset of Absolute.Mike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 5:19 pm .....I see Absolute 6 has many pianos, basses, organ, brass, but Absolute 6 is an addon to buy to use in Halion, correct? IOW - when you buy Absolute, you get Halion and a lot of other stuff.
Sort of like when you buy Komplete, you get Kontakt and a lot of other stuff.
Best bet to see what works for you is to try the demos.

Don't want this thread to be a who has the best thing, but there will be good and not so good in any package of instruments.Bippo wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 5:39 pm Does halion 7 has better bread and butter sounds than sampletank 4 or yamaha montage esp vst?
Someone made a few b&b tracks in Halion, SampleTank, and Komplete as a comparison. Search youtube for:
"Halion 6 vs SampleTank 4 vs Komplete 12: Song vs Song vs Song Comparison! Which One Sounds Better?"

Unfortunately it gets confusing the way Steinberg markets their virtual instrumentsMike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 5:19 pmThanks. Stenberg makes a bunch of different virtual instruments. Many of them run inside of the free player Steinberg calls HALion Sonic. Some of these instruments are free and some of them are paid. For example you can buy just FM Lab but it won't run unless you also have HALion Sonic
In your DAW you would load the HALion Sonic plugin and then select FM Lab in this example
Upgrade from there Steinberg has bundled a bunch of these instruments together and called it HALion Sonic 7 Collection. This combines the free player with all of the HALion Sonic Instruments. That list you posted are those instruments
From there they have the full version of HALion7. It includes everything in the HALion Sonic 7, including all the instruments plus more synth engines, deeper tools inside of those engines, more presets, and more samples in the library
If you get the full version of HALion7 you will get a bunch of bass sounds and other bread and butter sounds
From there you can get Absolute. With that you get even more instruments, more samples and more presets
I don't have absolute, I find the regular full version of HALion7 is more than adequate for my needs and it has a giant sample library and as many presets as you could want
I would demo HALion7 and if you find you need more get Absolute
I would also consider Omnisphere 3 which has a massive sample and preset library. I own that also.
The UVI Falcon ecosystem is similar to Steinberg's in that they have a flagship multiple engine sample and synthesis plugin called "Falcon". It comes with a rather large factory library of presets and samples, but beyond that, they also sell a HUGE variety of additional sample based content. If you are open to a subscription service you can subscribe to everything including Falcon, all of the UVI libraries, and effects for $25 a month which is a real bargain.

That explains it thanks! And explains why there is no official audio demo of some of the b&b stock instrument sounds, as they are older.IvyBirds wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 6:14 pmUnfortunately it gets confusing the way Steinberg markets their virtual instrumentsMike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 5:19 pmThanks. I have Absolute, and it can be a bit confusing what's all in there, that's not in Halion.
According to this post from the Steinberg forums: https://forums.steinberg.net/t/absolute ... n-7/930490
I think that the bass that you're looking for would be in Absolute, but not in Halion.
Halion does have tons of good sounds, but Absolute has a whole bunch extra on top of those.
If you want to be really sure before you buy something, you could do a thorough comparison
between these:

Halion 7 does have the Mellow Acoustic bass and also a nice Steel acoustic bass and a few jazz basses - including fretless and upright (the upright is my favourite)Mike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 3:47 pm I can't find a full instrument list or youtube demo of all the bread and butter instruments included with Halion 7 or Halion 7 Collection.

It's only the Electric Bass that is an addon but I have no idea if it is significantly better than the electric basses already in Halion which include funk, slapped, picked, rock basses and several other types
Incidentally - don't go by the list of 'Instruments' you posted - those are only the instruments that are created using macros with their own interface (more like Kontakt and Falcon instruments) but Halion and Halionsonic also have their own libraries with around 1500 presets covering a wide range of sounds including many that one might describe as 'bread and butter'

Thanks! I had no way to know that Halion 7 includes acoustic and upright basses and many other instruments. I see where the Halion 7 home page does say "1500 presents" but also only "15 instruments" but nothing suggests there are other included instruments such as basses etc. Except for the 35gb content.aMUSEd wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 9:32 pmHalion 7 does have the Mellow Acoustic bass and also a nice Steel acoustic bass and a few jazz basses - including fretless and upright (the upright is my favourite)Mike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 3:47 pm I can't find a full instrument list or youtube demo of all the bread and butter instruments included with Halion 7 or Halion 7 Collection.

Then I see they have a link to Absolute for many more instruments. However it says only "30 creative instruments". And now "130 GB sound content with 7,500 presets". Finally for Absolute they have the "All of these instruments are included in the Absolute collection:" section and options to see bread and butter instruments. I click on Bass and only Electric Bass shows up. I'm glad that's included but I wouldn't know they have and upright acoustic bass anywhere.
So thanks for letting me know. You say upright is one of your favourites (which is included with H7), does it have articulation keyswitches? Say for slide etc?

Absolute 6 has an Instrument called Halion Symphonic Orchestra with several Double Basses.
I went out on a limb some time ago and just bought Absolute on Kvr from someone much cheaper than online stores without ever trying Halion or Absolute, which you can get on here because seems like someone always is selling it cheap.
Absolute has good points and bad points just like Kontakt or Falcon and all that jazz. I really, really, enjoy Absolute and Halion personally; and it has incredibly good quality. I would go with your intuition on what to purchase.

For Double bass I would recommend Logic Pro (it has very good double bass), Modobass, Ezbass from Toontrack, there are a lot of good Kontakt libraries also, finally you need a good amp simulator to make that bass hit hard.
Jazz Anthology Bass is a very nice Kontakt instrument that is worth checking out (but there are many others).
You can try the Ample Bass Upright too.

Which Halion version provides Halion Sonic Factory Content? Where on Steinberg.net does it even mention there is a Halion Sonic Factory Content available?twal wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 6:17 amHalion Sonic Factory Content has a patch called 'Mic'd Upright Bass"Mike777 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 3:47 pm I can't find a full instrument list or youtube demo of all the bread and butter instruments included with Halion 7 or Halion 7 Collection.

From what I understand is that all versions of Cubase 15 come with the free "Halion Sonic 7" player which says "comes without any sample content", as indicted by the Comparison chart of Halion 7.
You can however download 9 free instruments for the free Halion Sonic 7: X-Stream, Taped Vibes, Navia Harp Free.....to Engine Roar. Except for the two pianos none sounds like they have no bread and butter instruments.
I then found that you can try/buy Halion 7 and Halion 7 Collection both of which include 15 libraries from FM Lab, Tales...to World Instruments This appears to include brass, organ and pianos but I don't know if any bass guitar/upright is in these 15?
I found the Explore All Instruments page that offers many other instrument libraries including bread and butter that you can purchase. These are paid offerings that will play in any version of Halion. I don't see any upright bass in these.
Again, how to download Halion Sonic Factory Content that has the upright bass? This must be referring to the Halion Full or Collection?
If I download Cubase 15 trial it will only have Halion Sonic 7 and no instruments to play except the limited 9 free which only has special pianos? I would then need to download a trial of Halion 7 (full) or Collection to play any bread and butter instruments?
