”Sound Cycle” was inspired by the new Pat Metheny release which sent me down a Metheny/Lyle Mays listening rabbit hole. I am a big fan of the Metheny/Mays big productions with layers of guitars/synths/trumpet and other instruments (like the album “The Way Up”).

The core “band” for this piece is piano, acoustic bass, trumpet, and drums. I recorded the piano sections to a click, arranged the sections, and then recorded drums (Zendrum - Toontrack SDX Custom & Vintage/Jazz SDX hybrid kit) and acoustic bass (LinnStrument - Trillian Acoustic Bass). Guitar was next and I played a PRS Special Semi-Hollow using UAD Paradise Guitar Studio for amp and effects. I added trumpet (a real one!) as a counterpoint to the guitar line. The layers are a track of the Expressive E Osmose synthesizer, the GForce TVPro synth played on LinnStrument, and the Soma Flux for the final track.

How are you not one of the top classical/jazz artists of our time? You must have a lousy agent. I'd fire his ass. Your stuff is just off the wall amazing. I don't even deserve to be in the same room with you.

The song starts with a few piano notes – without any clear direction.
Only the entry of the guitar, trumpet and drums establishes the
groove and atmosphere. The guitar and trumpet melodies are excellently
arranged. Together with the piano, I would say that "Sound Cycles"
is triple polyphonic. It's fun to listen to, and even the seven and a half
minutes are entertaining.

Great song! :tu:

Thanks so much for the kind words. I record primarily for fun/relaxation. Creating things is one way to deal with stressful time. I used to call it cheap therapy but it really isn’t that cheap! It adds to the world rather than subtracting.

Thanks very much! I added the unstructured beginning sections as an introduction after finishing everything else because I thought it was too abrupt to just come straight in with the melody.
