There are people with immense talent that never get discovered and copmlete talentless jokes that get worldwide famous. You should not compare yourself. The main thing is to have fun. Stop exactly at a moment where tugning knobs is not fun anymore. Don't push it behind that breaking point. That's wasting life. But if it makes you happy, do it. And if you learn some theory along the way, you increase the chance of those noises occasionally becoming a banger. But yeah, the fun is the main part. Lately I just ... play with synths. Don't record any of it. Just fool around. And strangely, I wouldn't change a thing.

I would suggest you look into developing your creativity-related skills. These are the ones that will help you get “ideas” of what and how to compose/produce and help you be and feel original. After all, talent is not only about skill but also about how you are able to create. You could start by looking into the progress principle by Teresa Amabile (the top creativity researcher): she basically discovered that if you have small wins/successes everyday, it will overall boost your motivation and thus creativity. So, work on being motivated by having small wins everyday day: maybe you can produce on small beat, or learn a new plugin etc.

Like in all other hobbies, people are often more interested in the gear than the actual hobby. I remember way back when when I was into serious mountain biking, there were so many people who had $4000 mountain bikes all tricked out and couldn't climb a hill before exhaustion set in. My suggestion to those who want to escape the gear addiction is to get a sub $500 digital piano and get a good piano teacher to help you. Abandon the computer and all other gear and focus on how notes turn into music. You may just awaken your inner Mozart.

Personally I believe skill and talent are totally different. Talent is what you're naturally capable of, or not. Skill is what you learn, that is not the same as talent.

My music is pretty rubbish to everyone else, but I listen to it and like what I've done. I enjoyed making it. I know little about it and am not bothered about learning more, mainly as I have more important interests, imo.

Just have fun with it. What else is there to do? Lol

Talent can be viewed as measurement for how fast and effortless someone can learn a new skill. It's not something that can be learned or enhanced, it's inherent, an aspect of intelligence.

Showed my younger brother his first 3 chords. Came back home maybe 3 months later. He was miles better than me. I'm just a plank spanker. He has the ear to pick up songs. But he also put time in. He still works on it. Bonus is his son seems have the ear too.

I'm a career producer and sound designer, have been doing it for 20 years, and still suck at it sometimes.

I found a career path in sound design and sound design products. A bit different than writing chart topping bangers but still very rewarding!

I find the differentiation the most obvious with singing. Some people are born with a singing voice that can make angels weep. Others, the same, but from the different end of the spectrum. Singing can be taught and learned, but the innate talent will still determine if you‘re a lousy/good/brilliant singer.
