Your problem here is a belief that fabs are all the same where sand goes in, chips come out.

The memory devices for HBM come from a different collection of fab equipment to those used for DDR5 – because you have to drill big holes through them to make the stacks.

And the fab lines for DDR4 are based on older gear which can't be reallocated to the high-end stuff. Big tech ain't buying up all the capacity. It's just put a stranglehold on the very top-end stuff because they're willing to pay more. Except they're not.

Intel doesn't have a business left unless it bids the same rate for the bits of TSMC's output that it needs. Ditto Apple. And I can guarantee you, TSMC has no plans to piss off Tim Apple. Intel is also mostly not making chips for AI servers, which is why everyone thinks Intel is toast (at least right now), so has very little interest in trying to bid up prices on that stuff.

Basically, your whole thesis is bunk and arguing the toss over the minutiae isn't going to help it.

No they didnt. datacentres = ECR and Xeons, as you yourself pointed out.
But you won't stick ECC DDR5 stick of RAM into a regular DDR5 slot. You can't plop a server XEON processor into an i9 ready motherboard.

If you think about it from the manufacturing perspective, then yes, they did. Chips on both types of RAM are the same, the module differs. And when it comes to CPUs, the turnaround is longer, but the ratio of consumer to servers CPU gets decided based on current demand. If Intel knows they'll sell way more Xeons than i9s, why would they manufacture i9s?

Once the parts are manufactured, they don't share the same pool obviously, but before the assemby they do. They come from the same fabs...

So I'm just imagining the huge RAM price jump? I literally have a 64 GB of DDR5 on the table that I mistakenly bought and forgot to return in August. It's five times the price now. The exact model.

We're talking about your assertion is that the situation is that server parts couldnt be put in domestic systems, with the implication that this was a new thing.

I have always run server class hardware for my home workstation (not the music box). I'd be willing to take dual EPYC and DDR5 registered ECC.

Problem for most of you folks is that you might need a special version on Winblows for dual socket machines.

You seem to be under the misconception that Linux can't handle a load that Windows is capable of. Linux is so flexible that it can be customized to fit into a 64Mb flash drive. That's not Gigabytes, that Megabytes. There isn't an OS out there that can be as streamlined and performant as Linux--that's why most synths and audio hardware (and darn near everything else in the embedded world) runs on Linux. Linux is rock solid too. It's only those who don't know what they are doing and are not running on fully compatible hardware that give people the wrong idea about its capabilities.

Linux could easily outperform Windows with 400 linux native vst plugins, provided you use proper audio distro, or you know how to personally configure a distro yourself for audio. If you've tried it already, you probably didn't give yourself enough time to get to "truly" understand it and be be able to configure it as needed. And if you haven't tried it, don't listen to what other people say, without trying it for yourself. There's a learning curve--for sure. But for many of us, the pros far outweigh the cons. :)

No no, I'm not worried about Linux performance. Actually Windows performance is crap lately due to all the AI nonsense. My problem there is only a few plugins in my collection that have a native Linux version. 😄 ...if that wasn't the case, I'd be on Linux already.

for dual socket that just means Win 11 Pro - or Pro Workstation for 4 socket systems (both available as in an in-place upgrade via the MS Store app ) - neither are cheap but not ridiculous prices

Bigger hassle in running that class hardware at home without heat/noise issues - I've got a quad 6418H server in one of the racks at work, even in an air conditioned data centre it howls like a banshee under load ( to the extent if I'm doing stuff in the racks for more than a few mins I need ear protection )

Sure there is - FreeBSD :)

I once ran a company firewall FreeBSD install from a readonly 1.44 MB floppy. That was before the switch to ELF, though.

I use the Coolder Master Stacker 810 case for my dualies. With Noctua HSFs.

19" is of course tough to get quiet.

Ah, yeah. Unfortunately there aren’t as many Linux native plugins, that’s true. It’s getting better, year by year, but if there are some absolutely must-have apps that aren’t yet on linux, then Linux may not be for you at this time. :)
