Thank you. Yes. Patterns are the heart of Loopy Looped Loops of Fruit. Patterns loop by nature.E_Anderson wrote: Sat Jan 17, 2026 11:34 am Yes, I was explaining what I think was likely Benedict's reasoning for describing FL's orientation towards loops, which I mostly agree with. You can have patterns, even per-instrument, that just keep going, and it's not that different (orchestras aside) from the more generally linear workflow of a "normal" DAW, but it takes just a bit more from the user to create new patterns and piano rolls within those patterns, sort of like how trying to produce with the same Pattern-based workflow in any other daw takes just a bit more from the user in splicing song chunks or using an arrangement grid. This isn't a problem, it's just design. FL Studio has a lot of upsides and very creative tools.
While one can make longer 'chunks' in a pianner scroll, it still is not Linear. Two very different mindsets. I subscribe to Linear - work this way - so don't care for a Pattern mindset, seeing it gets in my way. I do not deny its existence, merely Hank didn't do it that way. It is a personal choice that does not need overwriting by others. By nature, one assumes a Fruity Looper likes loopyness. I was clear that I was not a hater, merely answered the Q.

Many who compose "linearly" in FL Studio do so within a single pattern, as that keeps ghost notes visible and helps make part navigation smoother. But then when you look at the playlist, there's only that one pattern! Aside maybe one separately for the percussion.
Music always has patterns and always repeats itself in some way. FL Studio takes that a bit more literally, which works great for many styles. For people who write in that linear fashion, there are a few reasons they'll usually migrate to another DAW.
You'll hear some of then mumbling about missing Harmor and Patcher when they talk in their sleep, though.

Yeah, I'm not against the idea that patterns are loops. I'm saying that my idea of loops is a full track that loops inside FL Studio every 8-16 bars.

I like Craig Anderton's take on loops. I recall him posing the question of: what's the difference between a loop and a riff? Here is some of his content - https://craiganderton.org/tag/loops

He's a member here on KVR, but I don't think he gets by much. While having used FL am currently making a tune in Cakewalk Project5, which is quite old now but The MIDI workflow in the arranger feels much better/easier than FL... Still it would be great to have a P5 or FL with vertical flow like Aodix or BUZE tracker which are both piano rollers as well...
Not to bust chops on FLs highly touted piano roll but BUZE has incredible Rt-Click menu on both piano roll or FX curve lanes & many of those choices have submenus-

Here's a close-up of the menu easier to read, colors contrasted-

Point is having a flow from top to bottom with lanes that can be enabled, dealt with then hidden (including piano roll) makes all faster & cleaner...

I've actually never heard of Cakewalk or BUZE but that lookseLawnMust wrote: Tue Jan 20, 2026 4:30 pm While having used FL am currently making a tune in Cakewalk Project5, which is quite old now but The MIDI workflow in the arranger feels much better/easier than FL... yeaaahh... BUZE is pretty cool but has been abandoned since 2015 after much development, but it's FREE & still grabbable on the wayback-
https://web.archive.org/web/20220912050 ... index.html
It's 32bit which turn many off, I don't know why as most USED to use 32bit, many plug collections in 32bit going free now, never a better time to use 32bits...
BUZE was based off BUZZ but much better & can use BUZZ plugs, VST-VSTi, Psycle plugs, LADSPA & VAMP... It claims to use MFX but for me they always crash...
So like BUZZ BUZE notetracker triggers a single note in it no matter if you synth is mono or poly... However if you hook Topaz ChordworX inbetween You can select a chord in programs from a long list, if your synth is poly you then have a complex chord just hitting a single note...
Cakewalk Project5 is old commercial but sometimes they show up on EBAY, That's where I got mine like 16 years ago... It's kinda like old reason, all single page except for plug GUI, you can float the piano roll... Best MIDI workflow in my opinion, built-in arping of all sorts plus has a groove matrix for ableton like play & imports ACiD WAVs...
Here's my tune I started yesterday-

And you don't need a bridge for 32-bit plugins with FL Studio -- another nice feature!eLawnMust wrote: Tue Jan 20, 2026 9:50 pm It's 32bit which turn many off, I don't know why as most USED to use 32bit, many plug collections in 32bit going free now, never a better time to use 32bits...

Hopefully that stays in... Many hosts ditching ReWire these days... Fruity has ditched DX-DXi plug interfacing with version 10 being the last... Twas a few versions later they deleted the iconic TS-404 which was so popular back in the Fruity 2.x days... Can't use BUZZ machines anymore I guess or load Rebirth RBS song files which it did quite well back in the day & that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more...
This is known as 'retrograde' or gravitating toward a lesser or worse condition...
Oh & ableton dropping a ton of sampler formats with what?... Version 10 I recall... I dunno as ableton always seemed like crap to me, beware the app that acquires MIDI 'Down The Road'... Anytime I tried it plugin scanning never finished up right, I suppose if you only had 20-30 plugs you'd be fine but 900-1000 forget it entirely...

‘That FL sound’ like orange clip is trying to do. It’s pretty signature for urban music imo.
