Also note that external effects have been used in that demo, I think.

I have my doubts, reverb in SY77 was pretty bad no matter how you tweaked it, and the reverb in that demo doesn't sound bad at all.

So in other words, you're calling the guy in the video a liar.EvilDragon wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 11:39 am I have my doubts, reverb in SY77 was pretty bad no matter how you tweaked it, and the reverb in that demo doesn't sound bad at all.

I never could afford the SY77 at the time, so I am looking forward to SWAYED.

If grumpiness burned calories, you’d be in incredible shape. Do you wake up annoyed, or does it load after breakfast? Deep breath. I'm not grumpy but this is typical of KVR. Somebody says something and somebody else doesn't believe them so calls them a liar without any proof at all that what they said is untrue.enCiphered wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 1:37 pmIf grumpiness burned calories, you’d be in incredible shape. Okay.
It's one of the things I hate about this place. But if it doesn't bother you, hey, whatever.
Okay, I believe the guy that the SY 77 demo was straight out of the box without any external FX.
Prove he's a liar.

To be honest I'm not hearing anything in that video that I couldn't do in some other synths in my collection.wagtunes wrote: Tue Jan 20, 2026 9:50 pm For anyone who hasn't heard a real SY 77 in a long time, you have to listen to this.
Wow, if the Swayed sounds anything like this, I am going to be in heaven.
We already know this plugin won't be an exact emulation of the hardware due to the difference in sample content and someone who has the beta already said "filters in Swayed don't sound identical to SY77 but they are in the ballpark".
So I think it would be better to just stop making comparisons between the SY77 and Swayed. Let's wait for the demo to drop and judge the synth on its own merit.
For me the questions will be can it make sounds I can't already make or will it make better sounds than I can already achieve in other synths. Then of course price to performance will factor in the decision to purchase or not. Those questions can only be answered by spending time with the demo version.

Well, in my country, you're innocent until proven guilty. So somebody prove the guy who made that video is lying.Artie Fichelle wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 4:09 pm I thought Wagtunes was playing it. If not it is just hearsay.

The effects absolutely are relevant to SWAY. In the late 1980s Yamaha was getting destroyed by the D50 which had onboard effects so they added them to SY77. Sheaf said earlier he recreated them for the pluginwagtunes wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 10:46 amNo effects. As for that video there is no way the reverbs in that video are from the SY77. The SY77 had Yamaha's 1980s effects algorithms similar to the extremely popular SPX90 which every studio had at the time. SY77 ran the effects on different chips but they had similar specs including the same 16k of RAM
The difference is that because the SY77 is running internally at a significantly higher sample rate there is less available memory for delay lines. This has a pronounced effect on many effects Algos inside of it, especially the reverbs. The result was very metallic sounding reverb that quite frankly isn't very good. I don't hear in that video, I am hearing something else that is significantly "better"/cleaner
Most users of the hardware nowadays bypass all of the effects and never use them because 35+ years later there are significantly better options as we clearly see in that video
The highlight of the SY77 effects however is the "symphonic" chorus which is a sweet and wide, multi-voice chorus/flanger effect. It doesn't suffer from the lack of system RAM dedicated to effects as it has very short delay times, which because it's running at a higher sample rate actually sounds better, and it's phenomenal on Yamaha FM style Synthesis.
The Symphonic effect was also a favorite with guitar and bass, it was all over Nirvana's Nevermind Album, and Ozzy's No more Tears.
Sheaf said earlier that he recreated the Symphonic Effect, so I am greatly looking forward to it included in Swayed. Hopefully it has a wet/dry.mix control that can be modulated via CCs. So you can assign it to a Wheel or knob
There is also an awesome paid plugin called Neyrinck V-90 that nails it, and is worth every penny of the $50 it costs that I use on my FM Plugins, and a pretty decent free plugin of it called Witchpig Nevermore
