So do you honestly think ALL songs on a CD are great??

Just curious. I have somewhere between 200 and 300 CD's, probably less than the average music fanatic. BUT, I don't think I can pull out any CD at all
and say: "man I love all the tunes on this one". Actually, most of my favorite CD's only have 4-6 great tunes on them.
Either I'm very picky or else most artist just make sure they have a few killer tracks and then quickly make loads of filler tracks (rhyming eh!).
It doesn't matter what genre it is actually.

You always hear how artist A and artist B have written 45 songs and only choose 10 (great??) ones for the CD release. Are they just choosing randomly or what?

I can honestly say that many Prince, Skinny Puppy, Kitaro, Yanni, Tangerine Dream, Enigma, Dead Can Dance, and a few others in my collection the entire CD is good...not that I always listen all the way through...It just depends on what you're in the mood for at any given moment...

For myself, there are four types of songs:

-rocking tunes
-good tunes that fit a certain mood
-lousy tunes which got a little something
-really lousy tunes

first and second would make it onto an album,
third one maybe into a life performance (If that should ever happen )

Some tracks may also exist just to benefit the
flow of the album, to make a transition.

Many times when I heard ppl moaning about this
or that song, I was thinking of some specific mood
or situation I heard it and found it completely fitting.

as for all my tracks no i dont think all of em are great,in fact out of the 200 or so tracks i do in a year,no more than 4 or 5 are considered great in my mind altho most are just sketches.

i say yes and no for cds i own because i think it all depends on my mood.for instance ive just spent the evening listening to my entire dr dre collection(spanning nwa to present day)not something i could enjoy every day i assure you but occassionally i just dip into such things and get trapped.

there are only a few cd's I own that I think every song is great.
but I don't mind if not all songs are really good
as long as 4 or 5 really stand out
opnions vary,even among people who like the same cd's
I might thinks songs 1-5 are great while
someone else might think songs 6-10 are great

can't please everybody all the time etc etc

As to CDs.. well, almost none of them are 100% "good", but that's *in my opinion* and also varies depending on my mood, whether I'm drunk or sober, and the like. I don't tend to like ballads but record companies almost always insist on at least 1 ballad on every CD (or one slower song, you get the idea).

Remember, for most artists, they're not picking the songs for a CD in a vaccuum.. they have "help" from the producer, the record company execs, and anyone that can get a word in!

For my personal works, lyrics-wise about 1/4 of what I have around is likely "good enough" without extra work, about 1/4 is "usable with some rewriting", and the other 1/2 is "dreadful rubbish suitable for curdling milk whilst still in the cow". Often what sounded great one day, given a rest, sounds like abysmal dreck!

For me its all about mood.

I hadn't listened to my "sneaker pimps - becoming x" album in years, and then recently i stuck it on and listened to it loads since, its a classic.

Also cos i love dance music like Breaks/DnB etc, if i'm in the mood then i can listen to endless stuff on a theme.

Right now i can't get enough breaks, and if its dirty and chunky enough i'll listen to anything

But yeah if i was honest, a lot of albums i only really love half of it, and the rest is ok or in some cases crap.

hmmm... interesting. At least 1/2 of the people here mention "mood". What is that?
Maybe I never change mood or something, cause I can pretty much listen to most of the stuff I like, most of the time. Even when I'm chillin' I can listen to pretty hard stuff like Goa Trance or nu-metal.

I've never put much thought into this, but now that you mention it, I think most of the cd's I own fall into one of 3 categories:

A) all the songs are crap; I bought the cd off of a recommendation or a whim, and soon live to regret it.

B) there are 2 or 3 very good songs; the rest are filler

C) there are 4 or more good songs; and the rest are good enough that it's hard to rate any of the songs are filler. In other words, it's just an overall really solid album, and I would consider every song "great" unless I'm purposely trying to be critical.

The interesting part is how there's sometimes very little gap between B and C, yet when you purchase and start listing to a C album, you definitely notice it (that elation from knowing you've found a truly great (in your own opinion) album).

It does drive me nuts though when albums squarely fall into the B category. You love 2 songs, but the rest is complete crap. Really makes you wonder whether you have very odd tastes, or whether the artist really didn't give a damn on the rest of the tunes (Or maybe they thought all of the rest of the tunes were great, and they questioned the 2 songs that I throught were "great" ).

This is why I buy individual songs. I have very few CD's. The only 2 I have within arms reach are Wheatus and Tom Jones Live.
