3RD KIND for Zebra 3 (by u-he, currently in public Beta) is a close encounter with fascinating forms of audio synthesis, resulting in a sound library containing a diverse collection of somewhat familiar sounds and unknown sonic territory which still had to be explored. The modal filters and exciters introduced in Zebra 3 were used extensively to create physically modeled instruments and textures, hundreds of single cycle waveforms were created or imported into the oscillators in order to build interesting wavetables, the additive sound engine with its vast sonic possibilities was deeply explored and the oscillator effects play a prominent role in shaping or totally transforming the waveforms.

From swirling wavetable sounds to futuristic soundscapes, from deep bass sequences with juicy filter action to fascinating experimental sounds, from warm pads and dark drones to glistening digital textures, from groovy pitch and drum sequences - also in odd time signatures - to expressive and sometimes dystopian lead sounds, 3RD KIND will give many composers of cinematic soundtracks and electronic music in general a wide palette of inspiring sonic material to play with.

All presets make extensive use of the available modulators and have the modulation wheel, up to four Macros and sometimes aftertouch assigned for direct interaction and DAW automation.

You can view/download the PDF for this set including the license agreement, technical info and a detailed patch-list here.

Specs:
  • *131 tagged patches (including 2 variations).

Absolutely breathtaking patches Simon! I really love your programming on these presets. I already put my order in for a copy of The 3RD KIND, and I’m looking forward to seeing some of the design choices that you used to create such beautiful patches. Your presets are a pleasure to work with, and they help me to learn better programming techniques that I can apply to my own work.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with Zebra 3, and these specific sounds that you programmed are in the same vein as the rhythmic patches that I’ve been experimenting with on my Mac. I’m very drawn to these unabashedly digital sounds, with super hi-fi characteristics.

Now that I think about it, that’s probably why I’ve been focusing so much on my additive synths. Until now, I’ve been relying mostly on Icarus3 and Pigments for the majority of those types of patches, with an occasional appearance from NI’s Razor for beefy bass lines.

I love how even a little saturation or distortion can dramatically bring out the harmonics when combined with aggressive, additive basses and arpeggiated plucks. Zebra 3 can also generate what can only be described as “liquid” sounds, and extremely delicate and glassy tones that make great bell and percussive noises.

I go through these creative cycles where I focus on a specific synthesis type or plug-in. And I must admit, that a truly epic combination is Zebra 3 being fed into Dawesome & S1gns Of L1fe’s SOL granular delay/reverb effect.

I’ve been winding down after my sessions with this combo. It’s so soothing and relaxing for my nervous system. Synestia and BEAM are two other great multi-effects that also go really well with Zebra 3.

That being said, Zebra’s onboard effects are capable of some heavy processing. And ultimately, I do think that the synth was well worth the wait, after all these years. Good luck with your work on the rest of The 3RD KIND!! :tu:

Thank you! I find the range of timbres possible with Zebra 3 is vast and simply amazing really. The oscillators in additive mode in combination with the OSC FX modules mode instantly create a whole new world of sounds not related at all to the typical “wavetable“ characteristics. For rhythmical sequencer patches the MSEGSs are extremely versatile, basically one can switch/morph between numerous patterns within a given MSEG, they have the same editing possibilities as the oscillator waves and using them at audio rate speed opens even more possibilities. I am keeping away from using external FX with Zebra 3 while programming this set but often I just improvise away and use a plethora of plugins to further process my findings and Im having a blast doing so :) - the granular FX module certainly is my favorite FX module in Zebra 3.
And then we have the FM oscillator and the RM and Folder/distortion modules which further expand the palette and the filterFM just sounds so good fed with the appropriate side chain signal.
