I also wonder whether such terms were ever mentioned on the product page or in the EULA at my time of purchase, or whether there might have been some clause that said the terms might change at any time.

Sorry to Ben of KVR for mentioning these issues, especially regarding a (presumably) paying advertiser.

Sorry to Ben of KVR for bringing these issues to light, especially regarding a (presumably) paying advertiser.

I myself don't have the connections or the means to bring a class-action lawsuit, but I hope that DiscoDSP is aware that customers who live in other regions of Earth might have stronger legal backing to put some pressure on -- however, I also hope that it does not come to that.
This trash company needs to die

The licence from v7.x is really short: basically, the regular copyright boilerplate. It doesn't specify anything else, like rights to service, how the agreement might be terminated other than "at any time" or other things you might expect to see.

It does tell you that you can only take a single copy for backup, which is richly ironic given George keeps hiding behind this "you should maintain good backups because I won't" position: a single backup doesn't cut the mustard as any disk can go phut.

Also, there is the provision that you can't publish or distribute the "materials". George has used that before to get (critical) posts deleted here whenever someone posted what his own site says, claiming it's Important Confidential Material.

Post

i sent a message to their website support about this in case i'd got it wrong as i could only buy the synth from scratch and no upgrade option available anywhere. I didn't get a reply but thanks for clearing this up anyway.

Post

Btw. I saw that a critical comment (by someone else) under the most recent Discovery Pro YouTube video on the discoDSP channel is now gone.
In the past I didn't consider that YouTube comments might be moderated by the channel owner. According to the YT docs it turns out, that it is possible and leaves a bad taste regarding information exchange with others when censorship by the companies is that easy.

Post

In all honesty, I'm a bit surprised this thread is still here. Georgey-boy had a go at the Gearspace thread the other day. His normal MO is to have anything critical deleted where he can get away with it and just start a new one.

This thing about the "time window" is a 2026 BS from their part. Check the latest "time machine" snapshot: https://web.archive.org/web/2025071601 ... p.com/faq/
I wonder why there's no FAQ anymore... No mention of a time window whatsoever. Basically, they need more money and want to suck us dry. A very bad move! Personally, I'm not going to buy anything from them ... ever again. :bang:

PS: The FAQ snapshot is dated July 16, 2025. It doesn't change the fact that I don't remember seen a "time window" anywhere.

I will say it is a shame because the product is good. It is too bad the dev is so crappy to his supporters.

I had the update and nightshine on my wishlist.
Now I am glad that the dev isn't interested in business, so I can save the money.
I have too many plugins anyway.

Discovery Pro is a virtual analog synthesizer and sampler featuring 4 layers, 12 oscillators, 16 filter types (including Nord Lead 2 Zero Delay Feedback, Moog Ladder, and Oberheim SEM models), PADSynth re-synthesis, SFZ/WAV/SoundFont support, Nord Lead 2 SysEx import/export, and up to 16x oversampling. Over 5,000 presets across 100 banks.

Sound Engine
High resolution band limited alias free wavetable for smooth, detailed sound across all frequencies. JP-8080 Super 7 SuperSaw algorithm stacks seven sawtooth oscillators for massive leads and pads. Advanced distortion modes with baseline 4x oversampling. SIMD-optimized processing for x86 and Apple ARM.

Filters
16 filter types — Nord Lead 2 modeled Zero Delay Feedback, circuit-accurate Moog Ladder (24dB/12dB), Oberheim SEM Classic and Raw with zero-delay feedback topology, plus LowPass, HighPass, BandPass, BandReject, Formant, and Phaser. Granular filter visibility control with layout presets (Basic, Ladder, SEM, Full).

Polyphony & Unison
128-voice polyphony with Nord Lead 2 modeled unison calibrated for both polyphonic and legato/mono modes. All detune modes from the original hardware.

Sampling & Re-synthesis
WAVE oscillator with SFZ, WAV (16/24-bit), and SoundFont 2 support. PADSynth re-synthesis generates beautifully looped wavetable samples rendered as SFZ — ensembles, choirs, bells, and beyond.

Sequencing
Arpeggiator with Markov chain mode for machine learning-driven pattern evolution. Gate sequencer with note-off triggers. Graphic modulation envelopes with time-synced destinations.

Additional Features
Percussion mode with 10 drum kits. Disk mode preset browser. Octave key split. Aftertouch support. MIDI XML board templates. MTS-ESP micro-tuning. TouchOSC template. Multi-size GUI (400p/600p/800p, Retina ready).

Formats
Windows 10+ (AAX, VST2, VST3, Standalone) · macOS 10.15+ (Universal Binary 2, AAX, AU, VST2, VST3, Standalone) · Linux Debian 10+ (VST2, VST3, Standalone).

I hope you let your customers know beforehand as you're likely to lose many over this decision.

Who in their right mind would want to "upgrade" to v8 for 200 euros. Delusional...

Post

Are you really saying that owners of V7 have to pay the full retail price of the synth if they want to upgrade to V8?

I mean, if you want to make existing customers feel like their loyalty has no value, damage your brand, and generate less income, then sure, it seems like the way to go. But isn't that the exact opposite of what you'd want as a business?

Post

Exactly the same as U-he charging 30 euros for the update from Zebra 2 to Zebra 3 after more than ten years... or Omnisphere 3 upgrade less than 50% off the full price.
Or Serum 2 free for Serum 1 owners.

Talking about top tier products here, and, I could go on...

I'm not really sure this will end well.
