So do you honestly think ALL songs on a CD are great??

Honestly, if you can't think of one CD you own where every track on that album is good, then you're probably listening to the wrong music. I'd go looking around a little more if I were you, maybe even into different genres. For instance you may be listening to a lot of electronic music but deep down inside be a rock fan and not even know it, or vice versa.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

I heartily agree with Funkybot.

I don't know if this is pointed directly towards me or more of a general statement, but in my case I don't think I'm listening to the wrong style, but you could be right about "looking around" though. I just can't be bothered to look around that much to be honest. If I hear something I like, I'll buy it. If I get something recommended I'll check it out. But I never go to record stores and listen to a pile of new random CD's, even within "my genres". But I should probably try and listen more to genre specific radio stations.Funkybot wrote:Honestly, if you can't think of one CD you own where every track on that album is good, then you're probably listening to the wrong music. I've got 59 cd's. This is my latest...

I can honestly say every track on every cd is a f**king winner.

For us, we only used about half of the possible tracks from our 8 years of gestation so most of the rest are going onto the next one. We deliberately didn't use the ten best, instead opting for a better flow from track to track. Given the improvement in our production technique and teh couple of newer songs, I expect the new album to be even better than the first.
Seems like a good way to handle a more commercial sort of music. Save some of your good stuff for later dates. Problem is a lot of people get that contract in their hand, and they see $$$, a lot of young artists could benifit from advice like yours. Record companies want you to burn out though (after a couple really good album it just is easier to hire new talent and pay them 15% instead of the 18% you will probably want to re-sign for). Hard to keep to the ethic of not releasing all your good songs at once.
Good on you though.
Life IS short, enjoy.

I've been thinking,
concept albums usually rock all the way through.

Actually, I gotta admit...... I do have a couple of those CDs and I enjoy 'em. I hope that doesn't mean I'm banned from Kvr

Amen to Funkybot as well. I make my music and enjoy it, warts and all. But when it comes to just enjoying EVERY song on a CD or the radio... Country & Western and all the greats on 'Golden Oldies' I enjoy EVERY song on, and am not ashamed to admit it now.
I still like a few of the newer groups, but I find I'm just very critical of them like I should've been hired as the producer so I could fade this song in, gunk up the lead different, do tricks with the drums on this track, and so on.

Actually I liked their 80s era (I know, I know)
The only song I recognise on Reproduction is a version of Being Boiled which I really didn't like.
So maybe they had very distinct eras that I was never across.

Surely most of us have several CDs in which we consider them killer front-to-back? If I look into my CD wallet, I'm sure 50% of them qualify, with the other 50% being "Well, except for 1 or 2 tracks".
Still, the thread is about 100% awesome, so here are a few:
-Rheostatics "Whale Music"
-John Mann "Acoustic Kitty"
-Aimee Mann "Bachelor No.2"
-Pink Floyd "DSOTM"
-anything Neil Finn (solo, with brother there are a few iffy ones)
Do best of compilations count? If so, Crowded House "Recurring Dream"
back to normal discs:
-Tom Waits "Closing Time"
-Spirit of the West "Faithlift", "Go Figure", and "Labour Day"
-The Wonder Stuff "Never Loved Elvis"
-The Watchmen "Silent Radar" or "Fast Forward"
-Counting Crows... I'm sure they have one or two tracks I don't like (including that god-awful one from the Shrek Soundtrack) but I'll be damned if I can think what they are offhand; regardless, I know for sure that "August and Everything After" is all winner.
-Chantal Kreviazuk, "Colour Moving and Still"
-Dave Matthews Band, "Under the Table and Dreaming" or "Crash"
-The Tragically Hip, "Road Apples", "Fully Completely", and "Phantom Power"
I mean, honestly...
I find it bizarre to even think that there are people out there who could possibly have a CD collection and not have at least ONE CD that they love front-to-back.
