Entirely up to you. Just bear in mind there's no direct from disk streaming so all gets loaded into RAM.

Post

Might there be DFD streaming in the future ?

Could you borrow some of that beautiful Kontakt code ? 🙏

Just kidding 😁

But DFD streaming is rather helpful in a sample player
No auto tune...

Sure, but Shortcircuit is not necessarily THAT kind of sample player. We'll see. It's definitely not a priority to have it for us.

Do you need samples from analog synths / processed sounds as well? I was thinking about recording a few samples (no clear idea yet!), so I may consider giving them to the project with a CC0 license (I usually avoid CC0 because I want to keep a minimum of control - or "right to moan" - in case someone "abuses" of material provided for free, but that's definitely not the case with an open source project like Shortcircuit).

[edit] Also: is there a preference for sample rate / bit depth?
free multisamples (last upd: 22th May 2021).

I vote with my wallet.

Well, SCXT does have a virtual analog oscillator, too :) But generally don't mind various analog sources. Already had one user join the server and wishing to supply us those.

We'd like all contributions to be CC0. As for SR/BD, no real rules there (apart from 24-bit being superfluous in great majority of cases). In fact, one could save on sample set size by carefully choosing the sample rate depending on amount of high frequency content. You know, the way old samplers and romplers did. :)

What kind of sampler is Shortcircuit intended to be?

I had always hoped to see a really well done open source general sampler. Something that could be used just the same for one shots, mangling, and deep multi-sampled instruments. I remember using Vember Shortcircuit back in the day, trying to build a few things, but it was just too buggy with hoops to jump through and something-something about avoiding the latest version, using the previous version instead. It was fun trying to get on with it all the same, but I had hoped that the bugs and hoops would have been addressed, since I thought that the potential of openly shared sample libraries was unrealized and still seems to be, largely.

For now, one with the samples loaded in ram with the associated constraints.

But really we purposefully set out to not build a replacement for kontakt or to be as sfz complete as sforzando, two great alternatives for more traditional library uses. Or to sit where decent is doing a great job with libraries and players and so on, and a nice open format.

But one of the reasons we started beta is to find out where demand is and what usage patterns are going to be.

+1 for direct from disk
Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

It is way more likely that granular and timestretching and slicing will be there before any sort of DFD.

For me, Shortcircuit was always much more of a creation tool than a "use presets" tool. And at that, it's really awesome.

I am really happy to see SC back and open source! I think this is fantastic news!
I do have to say that I am, however, a little bit unsure about the user interface changes. I think one of the best features of SC1 (and one of the biggest problems of SC2) has always been the user interface and how fast you could use it (for instance, putting together drumsets with multiple samples per note was so fast, and the way you could quickly set the root note and range via MIDI...). If feels the new interface is more comparable to something like TW16wx (which I don't find very intuitive), or at least that was my first impression. I know that the code stems from SC2, but somehow I was hoping that one would take this as a basis to go back to the golden days :-)

Maybe I just need to spent more time with the new SC (and I certainly will!), but for now I just seem to have so many questions that I cannot figure out, like:
- How do I actually sample with this thing?
- Where is the voice mode section?
- How do I set mute groups?
...

Post

It doesn't sample, voice mode bottom left when in the group tab

Almost no sampler is actually a sampler anymore, since a long time, or forever for most virtual samplers. They're mostly romplers and audio source synths. Reason's samplers are the only virtual samplers that I can think of which have sampling capability.

Post

TX16Wx and HALion also do sampling.

Apparent DAWs can too
