People don't really buy downloadable software from brick and mortar retailers, does NI software even come on a boxed version?Sindikhate wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 10:35 pmThey watch influencer "musicians" basically a guy that can edit a video better than writing a track, and almost all have covered the "news".machinesworking wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 7:54 pmReality is online forums are for old people these days. My point is/was that most people are not going over this with a fine toothed comb, that's what us old folk are for.Sindikhate wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 10:35 pmThey watch influencer "musicians" basically a guy that can edit a video better than writing a track, and almost all have covered the "news".machinesworking wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 7:54 pmReality is online forums are for old people these days. I actually wonder if anyone from NI is monitoring these online discussions, folks must be talking about this on GearSlutz too. I have not been there recently. They probably do care what people are feeling, well like their customers, like me!

Guess it really depends, personally if I worked for NI and liked working there, I probably wouldn't want the extra stress of reading a shit ton of online posts from people who are not in the know, who are worried, and thinking it's all over for NI.Grizzellda wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 1:45 amExtremely long, prolly rilly, rilly long...machinesworking wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 11:47 pm It looks like we'll know in about 1-3 months how this plays out, wonder how long this thread will be by then?![]()

When Camel Audio stopped, they released offline installers.
I think, if it turns out that way, NI will do the same

There are a bunch of high-end devs in Germany, and I think the new U-he licensing method would be great for an NI comeback. If they added that, and left Native Access as an option for those who want it, I'd upgrade Komplete at the next holiday sale.audiojunkie wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 10:05 pm I have been using only serial number / keyfile software for years.
I have no idea how NI sales effect U-he sales, but if the two are not tightly linked, making U-he an offer to license their reg tools, and big enough for Urs to buy a beachfront mansion in Australia, might be a serious no-brainer for the lawyers to consider.
Cheers

Some confusing arguments, either you want to be off/line self sufficient (in which case you download the software and keep your own back up) or you want the convenance of having every stored on the cloud for whenever you need it. Personally I have a cheap backup drive and if I download something I keep a copy. It's unlikely we will ever get away with some form of on line activation, but as other have said, even if you have 'just a serial' if the developer goes away and stops updating the software, you will eventually stop using it anyway (or be forced to with OS updates) as there are 1000s of actively developed and constantly improving software instruments out there.
