During my era of going into debt, I owned Roland synths. Let me tell you, damn close.

The truth is, most of the recent emulations with all the improved processing power of todays computers are very close to the hardware counterparts. Yes, some are better than others but some are scary good. OP-X is a perfect example.

Whether it really sounds like the old Rolands I don't know, but it's a lot of synth for the money, with generous routing capabilities, especially the separate effect slots for each of the audio busses. Insta-buy, but for most purchases I'm more about the workflow and unique sound design possibilities than faithfulness to emulation, so I get if people are more concerned about getting the closest to their beloved hardware.

I've seen enough comparisons to know things are often very close these days, and I'm not even one to say that hardware always sounds better in every case, but I have done things like compared Roland's Jupiter 4 plugin with Mercury 4, and in my opinion, the Roland sounds better. Same with the Korg 2600. I will say their GX-80 was as good as Arturia's CS-80, and maybe even better in some ways. I'm just going by what I like, though. It's not like I'm sitting around thinking, "should I go for the CS-80, or just use the plugin? Actually, I like the Softube better than either of them. The XILS one is also very good, but how many emulations of the same synth do I need?

But that's a very slippery slope, because... well how many total synthesizers do I need? I've got like 9 hardware synths and more software than I could ever really exploit for the rest of my natural life span. That kind of makes me very picky about what I choose to buy, because the truth is, I'm pretty set.

Decent sounding synth with some bite and a solid low end. Nice grungy filter. Definitely one of their best sounding synths.

Downside for me is the UI becoming blurry at sizes below 100%. At 100% it's nice and sharp but also too big to fit on my 27" monitor, so to make it fit I have to put up with a blurry interface.

I have the Roland version too which I really like, even though it's mono. The Roland GUI is easy on the eye and pleasant to work with. It sounds great, super vintage character. I'll probably not be able to resist testing it against the SH-MAX though at some stage,... all effect off of course. I will also want to hear what the extra polyphony can do for the sound!

I like that initial resonant sound but find it difficult to match in software.

Might be a great job, but I have so many vst, that do the same or similar, so I pass.

I am still not sure whether I will buy because of the same reason, I love their Mercury 8 (the first Roland emu I bought), it is soooo funky, whenever it is some Yamaha emu, it is hard for me not to buy, though, I am Yamaha addicted haha but didn't buy every CS80 emu.
This year I only intend to buy Zebra 3 or whatever Yamaha emu will be released.

For me playability and response are the most important thing, if I can't play a synth funky, it is not for me, that's why most physical modeling plugin instruments don't work for me and also Softube softsynths. But that's just me and my expectations and requirements , they might be great synths for others.

I only need the one and Lush covers it. Lovely interface, great sound and polytimbral to top it off. I find Cherry stuff sounds a bit too soft in general, which is fine when its called for

Not in the same league as Lush soundwise, that's for sure. I do like the sequencer in the SH max, though it would have been much better if they added ratcheting. I guess one can crank the speed up and then mute some of the others to get a ratchet type sound going. The sound of the oscillators/filters fail to impress though. Maybe the Ring Mod can win me over - it's pretty much why I like the CS80 - for its ring mod.

I guess they bought the Behringer SH5 clone and used that....

Wouldn't bother me one bit. That Behringer sounds amazing.

Not in the same league as Lush soundwise, that's for sure.

Lush isn't an emulation of any of the three SH synths this is supposed to be.
