I'm always amazed how few humans actually have a good sense of humor. Odd. Humor aside, my band once did an acoustic "unplugged" ambient show at a Halloween party and there were some kids at it and they loved it.

It was supposed to create a false feeling of safety before going back into unsettling part but I understand that the music box is a bit on-the-nose

I am actually careful with my dark humour since I tend to go overboard with that, basically every dark ambient I made is a sick dark joke. Obviously it would be funny watching people's reactions on children's parties if I played it there, maybe some will need exorcism after that

It's just a trope that's so overused in horror movies that it's sort of a joke at this point. It just pulled me out of it. You should try a mix without it. I don't really think it needs it.
