Hi KVRers,

I’d like to share an instrument we’ve been working on and also get some feedback from people here.

Supreme Drums Taiko is our attempt to rethink how taiko drums are implemented in virtual instruments. Instead of building another huge multi-GB sample library, we experimented with a hybrid modeling approach using our new Epic Engine.

Why we tried something different

While researching modern drum libraries, we noticed something interesting:

Many sound amazing, but they often come with very complex mixers, lots of routing, and require fairly advanced mixing knowledge to get results quickly. For some users that’s great — but others just want to play and get a strong sound immediately.

So the main question we asked was:

👉 Can we keep expressive realism while simplifying the workflow?

The Epic Engine (Hybrid Modeling)

The engine combines modeling with intelligent sample rendering:

Extremely high dynamic resolution (up to 65,536 velocity steps with MIDI 2.0)

Unlimited round-robin variation

Engine behavior adapts automatically depending on drum type

The idea is to reduce the “machine-gun” feel while keeping the instrument lightweight and responsive.

Small Size, Performance Focus

The whole instrument is only about 200MB.

Because it’s not a traditional large sample library, loading is instant and live playing feels very direct. We were aiming for something that feels closer to an instrument than a playback system.

Playing Techniques

Rather than only cinematic ensemble hits, we focused on playable articulations:

Center hits

Rim hits

Stick hits

Ensemble impacts

So it can work both for scoring and rhythmic performance.

Simplifying Mixing (Fusion Effect)

Instead of a full mixer with many plugins, we built a “Fusion Effect” that merges:

EQ

Dynamics

Transient shaping

into three simple controls. Internally the processing adapts depending on the drum type.

The goal wasn’t to remove control, but to reduce setup time.

Microphone Perspective Approach

Another experiment was removing the traditional complex mixer layout.

Each drum has two microphone perspectives with simple level controls — clearer workflow, fewer routing decisions.

I’m genuinely curious what people here think:

Do you prefer deep mixer control, or faster ready-to-play workflow?

For percussion instruments, is realism more about samples or responsiveness?

Would a lightweight modeling approach interest you over large libraries?

I’m always interested in physical modeling.

I would really like physically modeled timpani to use with my SWAM instruments.

Great idea. We are considering to have timpani in our orchestra percussion.
