”Time Machine (Open Road Ahead)” is a Neil Peart/Rush tribute piece written shortly after Neil passed away.

I had a lot of help on this one. My brother Dan produced and played guitar. A fantastic singer, Robin Schell sang and came up with the harmonies and all vocal arrangements. Alan Scott played a killer guitar solo as did my brother. My son Ben handled the cover art.

I am looking forward to seeing the Rush reunion show this year and spent part of today listening to Rush (and the new mixes on Grace Under Pressure which is about to be re-released.

Time Machine (Open Road Ahead)

A fire burns inside me and moves me side to side.
Breaking all the chains that hold me to my pride.
Ascending into chaos making circles in the sky.
Play the drums, feel the beat, a sparkle in my eye.

Playing on the road, we move from day to day.
Say hello to you, I do wish we could stay.
The open road beckons and we cannot defy.
The magic of the music until the day we die.

Time machine, moving dreams, we cannot tarry long.
Fill your ears, words are clear, you can now sing along.

Years are flashing by like lights upon a stage.
Seventies, eighties, the songs a hit parade.
A circle of my friends, surrounding me in threes.
Notes are flying in the air and catching on a breeze.

Every generation forming chains without end.
Living now forever in the memories we will mend.

I like the tune, but I feel it could use a mastering pass to tame some of the high frequency content. It's almost to the point of being shrill.

Just yesterday, I visited the Hard Rock Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Amongst many other things, they had a black Rickenbacker electric bass once used by Geddy Lee (probably my favorite bassist). I agree with zerocrossings comments on the EQ. This sounds quite similar to Rush in several regards: the synths, Stick/electric bass, the vocals (especially during the verse), the guitars, the lyrics, the drums; even the artwork. Anybody that can sound that close to Rush (one the most amazing rock bands ever) has to have a lot of talent. Everyone's performance is really good; so are the melodies! A fitting tribute. I will be posting a new song before long; perhaps you can check it out.

Thank you! I am very excited to see their new tour. I did see them twice years ago. Not only are they great musicians but they appear to be genuinely good people.

Enjoyed the listen - massive Rush fan over many decades and this is a fitting tribute!

Noticed the High frequency issue comment - and I see you've posted a new version...

YEP! Much more listenable now...first was just a tad harsh at times!

We here (enroe) are all Rush fans, so a Rush like song is a bold move -
and is viewed very critically: Can it even be good enough?

However, Neil Peart's death was unexpected; it was a devastating
event. RIP Neil Peart!

But now to "Time Machine":

So you are providing a new song, a different Rush-interpretation,
which definitely holds up. The overall feeling comes across really well,
and the individual contributions (solos, vocals, drums) are really great.
You even nailed the Geddy Lee-like vocals.

So all in all: well done! A brilliant Rush-like song.

Thanks! Tribute songs like this can be tricky because you want to balance incorporate elements of the artist without copying.
