Hmm, what could I type here to get people to listen to my song?

Maybe needed a little bit more variety of texture for me personally...needed a few more breaks from those heavy FX vocals + the general craziness?

I kinda like the lack of 'words' in the vocals, but if they were meant to be intelligible, they weren't for me.

Yeah I hear you on "a break from the craziness ", which is what I was trying to do with the break in the middle where it was just some minimal rhythmic vocoder and sample chopped vocals playing. All drums and instruments were stopped completely, but I did struggle with "is this part calm enough"?

Another person commented on intelligiblity, so I'll post what I replied again here in case you don't see it: My lyrics are always on the song pages if you're interested. My general thought is, because the lyrics are there, the song doesn't have to be as clearly enunciated.
It's funny, someone else said they could hear the words really clearly, so I guess everyone is different.
But I agree that many songs are tough to hear the words. Or at least lots of rock music.
It's tough for me to judge after hearing it so many times and knowing the words, so thanks for your thoughts.

Well, funk might have different subgenres and it is not important indeed whether to categorize a song. Your song reminds me of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - Mnpls power duo!

I completely agree with you that on my setup (Dell desktop with Reason DAW), Softube synths sometimes behave in strange ways that seem like errors. For me, I can usually work around them with DAW editing or plugin modulations.

For now I've made peace with the fact that I'm not the best at mixing and mastering, so please listen like you would for enjoyment, and not for purposes of deconstructing the song, etc. I'm doing this as a hobby, and don't have time to do tons of tweaking. That said, if something sounds horribly wrong, you're welcome to tell me

EDIT: I'm not looking for money or notoriety, and I doubt I'll ever find enjoyment from the technical details of mixing & mastering. I just want people to listen and have a moment of joy or reflection or appreciation for sounds.

I gave it a listen, and I really like it. I will say one thing, and this is because I do the exact same thing, and that's that you did too much. My motto is "work on it until you ruin it." The last track I did had about 1/3 of it removed, and somehow I always do this. I just keep having ideas, and adding... and then it becomes hard to find a song under everything. You have a fantastic groove, and it sounds great. I'm just saying I'd give it more space to just breathe. Your audience can actually handle a lot of not much happening. More than you instinctively think it can. Alternately, you can make the track longer and swap out things, instead of having so many things going on at once.

Oh, and I also wanted to mention that I have no idea how to get people to listen to your music. I can post a picture of my at and easily get 30 likes and comments, but a song I worked on for a month might get a single listen. Hell, my parents follow me on Facebook and can't be bothered to listen to anything I do. I have never managed to get this to happen, and I suspect I never will.

I kinda did it on purpose, in a sort of homage to those funk songs where there is so much going on, you're like: "What is going on right now, I'm lost...where did George Clinton even go (is he still on stage?!?), and what is Bootsy playing?, and does somone have a kazoo?"
My other tracks are usually probably less guilty of this, but again, it's good to hear the feedback, because I do often l have that gnawing feeling: "is this too sparse"?

I went to see Fishbone in the 80s. Living Color opened for them, and they were amazing. Everything. The mix was great. Then Fishbone took the stage and was a frenetic wall of annoyingly loud noise. It was as the Rutgers campus gymnasium, and it was too small a venue for what they were doing. They were fun to watch, but that’s about it. I bet in a medium sized theater they would have been great, though I did once walk out of a Bootsy Collins concert in a theater because it was painfully loud.

Yeah, my parents are both retired school teachers and seem to always be complaining about being too busy. My mom complains that all my father does is watch YouTube, but not my videos. He’s dealing with memory loss so he probably wouldn’t remember it anyway. To be honest, that’s always been their way. Their sole interaction with their only granddaughter is to put money into a college savings account for her. They’ve never once really asked about her or even showed interest in talking to her. Weird.

Sorry about the family dynamics; I'm sure you know, and it's probably cold comfort, but sometimes it's helpful to hear that my friends' families (and mine) have some of those same disappointments.

Agreed about making music for yourself; realistically with all the AI slop and other distractions, access to/attention for music just isn't like it used to be.
