I think it's the GUI eating cycles

Done similar tests between Live 4 and Tracktion. Live 4 seemed to be using about 60% more CPU than Tracktion running the same MIDI tracks through the same VST plugins.
There's something odd in the CPU handling of Live 4 - several people have reported overload problems and over at Ableton they are looking into it.
In the meantime if you plan on using several VST instruments/effects you will probably have to bounce down to audio.

indeed, the GUI didn't seem to be a problem with v3 so it probably is the midi code

I think I'll just keep using FL, eXT and Reason for creating audio/loops with vst's and use Live as a scratch pad for compositions.. there doesn't seem to be a point in using it for midi at the moment. Maybe the new update will fix thingsheadquest wrote:Done similar tests between Live 4 and Tracktion. I hear that Live 4.0.5 might address some of these issues... but I'm not holding my breath.
For me its back to Tracktion - especially with v.2 incoming. I've realised that on my laptop I need a freeze to cope with the stuff I'm interested in producing (I use some quite intensive effects at times).
In the meantime though, all we can do is keep on downloading the bugfixes and test what happens. But I do think that Live 4 has been over-hyped by the media, and for once I'm beginning to side with the cynics who dismiss all review out of hand
