I'm guilty of largely ignoring John Adams' work due to the hardcore minimalism, eg., Nixon in China, or Phrygian Gates. So this blew my mind. Since I have found a few things that are far from the minimalist Adams.
In 1980, Adams was well known enough for me to totally know who he was and things he had done, but when I was at SFCM he wasn't even given his own office, he used the desk in the entryway to Electronic Music Lab. "Have you seen my aspirin?" I only knew him to say hi to in Panhandle Park, walking the dog. He worked the docks in Oakland for a while before he got the SFCM job.
