How does this compare to the xv 5080?c_voltage wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 10:03 am Grabbed 1080 tonight, liked his sound, gritty stuff.
(The only thing, did not found the same beautiful envelope element "End L" as in D50. But ok)
Btw, I also refresh a bit my feels on RCM; I haven't used it in a while, and wanted to check how quickly it would ask for a connection, and yes, it did, ok. But what I wanted to say is that it showed updates for the synths I had installed (D50 with Digital PolySynth bundle). I updated, and VST2 was deleted forever lol. It was only a minor update (in the case of D50, it was from v1.14 to v1.15). This is exactly what I wrote about earlier – lack of access to installers, which would allow user to preserve it. Fortunately, VST2 isn't a deal-breaker for me (although I prefer it when given the choice), but I imagine there would be other users for whom it would be. Also, I don't see a changelog in RCM; it's sometimes useful to read it before installation. If everything is done exclusively through the manager, it would be nice to take advantage of all its potential advantages, which could include a changelog.
Anyway, at positive note - 1080 really nice thing. Together with D50 this is sort of grit+organic true powerhouse. with some weird in a good way things.

My favorite is Zenology Pro with all the Synth models and srx banks when it comes to old and modern sounds from Rolands History in one plugin.
The other synths i like is the Sh-101, Juno 106 and the 60 and the System 1.
The Sh-2 would also be on that list if it supported last note priority instead of only low note priority.

Hi, sorry i don't know, since there is no trial ability in RCM (and my free trial already was expired, which i mostly used for check synths from the Digital Polysynth bundle, and by some coincidence decided to check JV-1080 then too, but not 5080).surreal wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 5:33 pmHow does this compare to the xv 5080?c_voltage wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 10:03 am Grabbed 1080 tonight, liked his sound, gritty stuff.

But regarding the combined information about the (possible) sound differences between the 1080 and 5080 plug-ins, which I've received from various sources, the situation is somewhat contradictory. Some say there's no difference at all, while others notice a few nuances (which were also mentioned in this thread).
But everyone who does notice a difference notes a more "open" (that's how I understand "raw") sound in the 1080. Other synonyms include: toy-like, rough, grainy.
While in the 5080 (one can assume) it may be processed by some kind of permanent compression (?) (refer to @J Veronica expression), or sound more smooth due to the lack of some "decimation"\downsampling locked algo under the hood in the 1080 plug (?)
In general, it's a mystery.
(By the way, if i not mistake the person from Roland's team present in thread. In theory, he could disclose details if it doesn't conflict with marketing interests)

I borrowed Jack Sparrow's copy (and immediately uninstalled when done) to compare them. It would be cool to get some definitive answer on differences from the Roland team.
Someone also said it's better to buy one of the SRX collections instead, as they can play all the JV and XV sound banks. So now I'm tempted by the Orchestra SRX plug-in, because it has a lot of sounds used on PS1 games, lol.

2080 is a lil different and closer to 5080, but synths rather closer to 1080 with a tiny lil boost at around 230 Hz, but still some hum noise that make 2080 quite different from very digital and cold sounding 5080, but the knobs of might be better from a haptic perspective.
And from a spiritual view
20+80=100
10+80=90
50+80=130
So depending on your ascendant you know what to choose!

Why the 1080 and not the 5080 though? Same plugin more waveforms and presets right?c_voltage wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 10:03 am Grabbed 1080 tonight, liked his sound, gritty stuff.

For people claiming the 1080 plugin does not have this soft-compression character, unlike the 5080, I'd like you to show your working in determining this (not just "one sounded more open to me" which I'd suggest is likely just expectation bias).
I looked into this a while back, and verified the 5080 hardware and the plugin both seem to have this compression behaviour, it seems to be baked into the engine, and while I didn't test the 1080 plugin explicitly, as the engine is exactly the same for the 1080 plugin (as we know it's *not* an actual 1080 emulation, it's the engine from the 5080/Fantom), I'd expect the behaviour to be identical too, as every other aspect of the plugin, other than the included patch banks and the faceplate UI, is 100% identical between the two. But I can't verify whether that's true or not at this point, as I haven't done the test.
I'm genuinely interested if it does actually differ - test it, and please let us know. Also, please detail your test methodology - I won't spell out my method of determining whether this compression behaviour exists as I don't want to unduly influence anyone else investigating this.
Then once we know the truth we can avoid spreading incorrect info further and we all benefit...

Back when I subscribed to the cloud I recorded multiple identical patches from the 1080 factory library on both the 1080 and 5080 plugins and they nulled.beely wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 12:24 am For people claiming the 1080 plugin does not have this soft-compression character, unlike the 5080, I'd like you to show your working in determining this (not just "one sounded more open to me" which I'd suggest is likely just expectation bias).

You can also strip everything out but individual samples and play them as one shots without looping and record them and see they are exactly the same as they null
Finally take a peek at the JV1080 effects, you will see the SRV reverbs listed. (Also on page 34 of the manual) These come from the XV5080 and were actually originally from the Roland SRV-3030 Effects unit that didn't exist when the JV1080 came out
Roland should have made a single JV/XV/Fantom plugin. They could have even called it the 5080 and included all of the expansion ROMs in it like Korg does with the Triton from the same era.

Yeah, Korg has done the admirable thing of making all of their expansions free with their instruments and not nickel-and-diming people with separate "instruments" for expansions.
It would be nice if all of the patches from the SRJV series were available, too, and not just the SRX cards. I need my "Liquid Sky" patch from the Techno expansion, dammit.

Yes, it would be nice wouldn't it? Some of the most amazing sounds from the JV-XV instruments were the Multis/Combos. Maybe the sound you are fond of is from a multi that no longer exists? I was really mad when I found out that none of the multis are included. Shame on your Roland. Some of your best work, gone.
