Have you also noticed that some old plugins won't run any more on current os?
I am going to make a poll that will show devs what os are still being used to inspire them to make all their releases in future also run for example on Windows XP.
Don't know much about Mac OS, so sorry for not including all versions.
The current version of Reaper for instance has still installers for Windows XP!

There we go!
I expected most daw users to have Win7.
add.
I obviously was wrong, but there are still Win7 users.

Ok I'll bite
Why would anyone actively develop for Windows XP? And why would anyone who is still using Windows XP go on the Internet and start downloading random files when it's not secure at all? Should developers ship out boxed CD roms also?
I say that as someone who has a Windows XP machine that I keep to play classic video games and that also has music software on it from back in the day
Beyond that is that reality that even at the very end of its product cycle a high end Windows XP machine was running a Core 2 Duo at 2.2 Gg and 4GBs of RAM earlier years were significantly less
While that can work for a stripped down DAW like Reaper if all you want to do is use it as a digital multitrack recorder trying to run modern plugins ln such a machine is fools errand
Windows XP also has a 0.19% market share seems rather silly to focus on that and most of those are going to either be classic games enthusiasts or businesses that have custom software to run in XP
Windows 7 enjoys slightly more support but most things that run on Windows 11 will also run in Windows 7 as long as you have enough CPU and RAM power
Beyond all of that however is the limitations you will experience in finding controllers and interfaces that will work on ancient computers that's to drivers and improvements in USB standards
Moving forward Windows 11 now supports MIDI 2.0 natively right in the OS and can do all sorts of things with MIDI that Windows 10 and earlier versions couldn't.
I would much rather DAW and Plugin Developers focus on MIDI 2.0 and all the enhancements that can bring that backwards compatibility and installers for ancient operating systems that no one is using

I was going to say you can't even activate Windows XP, so there is no way to setup a test machine. But apparently, Microsoft restored the activation servers in 2023, after shutting them down in 2019.
Still, I'm not going to limit myself to Visual Studio 2017 and C++17 just to support a tiny number of people on an ancient OS.
That said, I've already dropped Windows 7 and Windows 8 support. On the last version that supported those OSes I had 0.69% of users on Win7 and 0.03% of users on Win8.

Because I know quite a lot of daw users still using Windows 7 to be able to still use some old gems.
I have Win10 and 7 and use 7 more and most new plugins still run on Win7 like Cherry Audio, Korg Native, GForce, Avenger, U-he (even Zebra 3), Cableguys and many more.

I know you refer to Win XP, I refer to 7 and 10.
All plugins whether effects or instruments I am interested in work perfectly with Reaper and Win7
I remember when I was curious to download and try Autotune or some other Antares, it didn't work and Acustica Audio and Roland cloud, too, I couldn't care less, would never buy their plugins, but I demo most newly released plugins.
Just tested some Arturia demo and it also still runs.

I expected more KVR members to use a daw, obviously a lot of music producers still use analog and tape, that's interesting.
Or doesn't Kvr have more than 70 members?
What about a poll
daw vs analog tape recording vs digital workstation recording (like Tascam, Roland VS1680 etc) vs Smartphone recording?
Would like to know in what countries Linux is used?

Or the vast majority of members see no point in participating in such a useless poll. No developer is going to base their actions going forward on such a poll.
No developer should spend one single second of precious development time making sure their plugins work on WinXP.DCrown wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2026 9:05 pm I am going to make a poll that will show devs what os are still being used to inspire them to make all their releases in future also run for example on Windows XP.
I have computers that run: WinXP, Win 7, Win 10, Win 11, and Linux but I don't want developers to spend any time on anything other than compatibility for Win 11 (or perhaps Win 10 for the next couple of years).
Supporting older operating systems or ones that have a small user base would be a drain on developer resources without a corresponding financial return and would only serve to stunt the growth of the industry into the future. Keep in mind that they'll not only have to support the outdated OS but also the outdated hardware its running on. All work with no reward.

The minimum system requirements of our current product versions are Windows 7 and macOS 10.12.
Older versions of our plugins that work with older operating systems can be downloaded here:

Please note that old operating systems like Windows 7 do not longer get security updates! It is risky to use them if you're connected to the internet.

It is appreciated to be able to download old legacy installers, sometimes devs do not offer it, though, what I don't comprehend.
You want an old version of a plugin, pay the current price, but do not get it sometimes

It is quite interesting too see how many people use older OS, every dev who ignores it loses money.

Yes useless. Nobody (with a life) cares about what OS people use and no dev is going to change their business plan based on a poll with 92 votes. It is statistically insignificant.DCrown wrote: Wed Mar 04, 2026 4:38 pm Useless???

Going forward please put these kinds of threads in the "Everything Else (Music Related)" sub-forum to keep this forum for the discussion of actual instruments and stop sending me PMs.
