DSI Mopho, a new editor called Moforge

Hi!

Im a long time owner of first a Mopho desktop and now the Mopho Keyboard version. I love the sound and the routing capabilities of this synth but there are too few knobs to use it without a software editor.

From day one the editor that DSI suggested was really really bad. Full of bugs and merely unusable. What was even more annoying was the lack of updates and now more that 10 years later it feels like abandonware. I was about to sell my synth when I realised that im a developer and an AI could help me with the midi implementation.

So I decided to create a new editor to blow some life into the old mophos out there. Im currently at beta stage and would like to see some beta testers. That's why I turned to this forum.

Currently the software is completely web based and runs in the browser (preferably chrome). If there is an interest for this editor I will publish it and make it available for a reasonable price that covers the cost of having it run in the cloud. I also has some good ideas on how to evolve this into something more than just the editor.

But first things first. Is there anyone but me still using the Mopho that would have an interest in beta testing this software??? Let me know and I will make things available. If there should be enough people out there still using it I might turn the software into Mac OS / Linux / Windows AU/VST later on.

Everything is routed via midi both ways so changes via the hardware knobs is reflected in realtime in the UI. Patches can be saved in the synth banks or on local disk. I have a plan to make it possible to save and share patches online.... that is if there is still people using this synth.

I did put a lot of effort into making the step sequencer easy to use since that is one of my favourite parts of this synth.

I am lucky enough to own a Mopho SE and this does look interesting to me.
I also haven’t used it for a little while, so this might be a way to get the dust cover off and make some noise with it again as it’s a wonderful sounding synth.

Ohh, perhaps I should mention that there are no fancy knobs, polished skins or stuff like that. Since I made this tool for my own personal usage to start with I don't want it to look "cool". My priorities is in the usability and workflow to 100% So I mostly use sliders for parameters and dropdowns if its not too many choises. I have never quite understood the idea of making a computer UI look exactly like a hardware synth. But that's just my personal preference. Like I said, I will get back with a url soon...

I tried to polish away as many bugs as I could. The tricky parts is not to let the UI drift away in another state than the synth itself. If that happens there is a sync button. It should not need to be used if everything works as it should.

When you load the page it wants you to allow the page to use your midi devices. After that you should go to the settings tab and choose midi in and midi out. This is in and out from the editor so this should be connected to the mopho synth both ways. If that interface does not show up try the refresh button. If that does not work try to disconnect the mopho and connect it back again. Most of the time it seems to just work but sometimes WebMidi does strange things. I tried both Firefox and Chrome under Linux and MacOS. Both seems to work. Input under MIDI can be set to a midi keyboard. The editor will then route any input from that keyboard to the synth.

I dont own a desktop version if the synth I have the keyboard. So obviously I did not try that but it should be pretty much identical.

And by the way. Im aware of one bug when you resize the browser window things get messed up... Im working on that one. A work around is to size the window to the desired size and then refresh. I will fix that as soon as possible

One more thing. To get the sequencer step indicators flowing you need to have the mopho output a clock signal.

- The resize problem is fixed
- MIDI intializating is more robust.

I'm testing with a mopho desktop module, which is connected via a motu soundcard midi DIN. I seem to have 2-way communication, in that changes on the ui are reflected on the synth and vice versa, and I can select patches. the UI is also aware of what user patch I am on, but it never pulls the patch names successfully. On refresh I see "scanning patch names" but they never sync. I notice the ui doesnt sync on patch change either, or when pressing the sync button. I'm wondering is it a midi setting I have incorrect on the mopho?
I'm using chrome browser btw.

Hmm, thats weird. I got the Keyboard version that I did my testing on but this part of the midi spec should be the same.

What happens when you press the refresh button next to where you select midi in and out to the editor?
