Do not blindly follow Rulez like this. That is exactly the sort of formula I rail against (even in that video above) as it does huge damage by mystifying rather than clarifying.

What happens is you clutch this nugget or apparent secret wizdom like it is a life raft in the middle of shark bay. When the reality is that there was a reason for someone saying this, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with the song you are mixing right now in your DAW.

Cut more than boost was more about noise; adding 56dB to 2k brought up the noise inherent in the hardware rig. So if you could cut elsewhere and achieve the same outcome, it was smarter. Also, a more experienced engineer learned that when you have two knobs, using one cut to help 'clarify' other parts of that sound left one knob for something else - like a boost at 4k. There is still value in this knowing but ONLY if you grok it. Otherwise, if you feel that a nudge to 1.3k is getting things there, do that. Maybe in 2 years, you may feel that a dip at 456Hz gets a slightly nicer outcome but that is irrelevant until you are able to feel that. Doing a cut at 456Hz, coz sum eejit YooBooberz sed, will fail as you don't feel it. You just forced it on your piece blindly believing that it would make you proper proful. There is a reason that Hank Williams didn't do it like that.

As for this 'cut one thing where another is', this is just sidechumpery. A Song is meant to feel 'as-one, one thing, a whole. It is not meant to feel like 13 tracks all avoiding each other like Tok Tuk junkies on a bus. IF there is a hole where the snare goes, it never sits in the mix. It is never part of the piano (or whatever you hacked up with that cut). The snare floats aimlessly. It is not that I have not at times done some of this as sometimes it really is the only solution one can find at the time - I had to gently use the vox to duck a violin - but making it a first and last and always action is not honoring the material and feeling what it needs.

Always: I am not the God of My song.
The Song is sent to/through me by The Song Gods. My role is to get out of the way so I can serve the Scene & Story of the Song.

Follow the song, not the ego. Tipz n Trix are ego (fear). There are things to learn but they need to be done through feel, not technicalities. This is why I beg people to practice, sit there until they feel the changes. Then do it again and again. Every time helps them connect to the truth. This is the Miyagi "wax on wax off" mindset.

To me it sounds like several questions with each having its own group of solutions. I associate oomph with falling pitch (Pitch bend, auto-filter etc), pop with the beater (Static or dynamic EQ around 2 kHz), presence with the region around 6 kHz (Static or dynamic EQ in combination with room reverberation) and hitting hard with additional overtones (Saturation)...

If you feel like you need to apply notch filters, then there's something wrong with the instrument, the recording environment, the microphone, the audio interface or a combination of those and that should be fixed accordingly. Using EQs to fix such issues not only doesn't work, it makes everything worse.

Deleted as maybe in hindsight the poster did not mean it as it came over to me.

Now that has some serious oomph! :tu:

In a modern mix, most used are eq,saturation and compression to push drum section in front.
I am experimenting with hard compression and saturation on kick.
Each segment is different and my personal opinion is that, it is more versatile, if use different compressors,eq and saturators on kick, snare, clap and hi hats.
Don't have enough years of experience of mixing to generalize ,but like to experiment with known and unknown as fx chain.
For example 1176+la2a is classic combination, but what about if add Fairchaild 660/670 or favorite VCA compressor somewhere in the middle of a complex fx chain, combining eq,saturators and compressors.
Some free plugins behave very nice among commercial once.
It's personal taste and preference i guess, but to me is totally boring to use only one compressor,eq,saturator.
Always prefer multiple instances of fx to add lite color and character.
If you have a dope drum samples, most of the job is done, but when right fx is on the mix get to another level.
Cheers :)

I have to agree with you VELLTONE, if the source is good very little work is required.

Couple I love is : WA makes a few : Put Me On Drums and Beatquake are two favorites. Also Infected Mushroom Pusher ( but you have to tame that)

Dope drum samples + Dope Instruments + Dope fx = Crazy good mix :):):)
On kick to me mandatory fx chain is: Saturation - EQ - 1176 Rev.A

Each of us have our own secret sauce. :D
I use Audija Kickdrum for the source and start sculpting, it takes me a long time but I am sure its worth the effort and from there add an Eq just to tame the bottom end. Thanks for your recipe VELLTONE :D

No problemo :)
The more i experiment an gain self esteem, the more questions need answer :)
In fact every answer i get led me to more questions :)
Is tape or tube saturation better than clipper or preamp, when to use this or that,on what is better and why,so on:)
Especially order of fx is endless as combinations,so it could be good or great, just replacing one element with another or using one type of fx or other.
Totally subjective, but to my taste some developers do really nice stuff, other are ok and third are waste of time.
No recipe,no formula and that's the trill - tomorrow you can make something, that no other on the planet have done yet :)
How not to experiment with such perspective :)
Cheers :)

Waves API 2500 compressor ( AA Pink is a joke compared to Waves version btw imo).
On kicks Waves dbx 160 compressor (Arturia doesn't work for me) depending on genre
Or use a parallel drum track with guitar amp, low cut!

Clipper for crazy transients, then usually just a well set compressor. The attention to the rhythm that dude was showing in his video was pretty much how I would do it. For some tracks I'd also use some upwards compression. This is all assuming that the tone and balance are good. Usually I'd do an eq before the comp and after the comp if there are frequency issues and to adjust how the drums relate to the rest of the song. Not much in the way of a single magic plugin though. Waves Pusher can get some pretty weak drums (especially when you're using someone's stems) to sound nice and dirty in a useful way.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

This is something i use often to really beef up drums and give them more punch / presence.

Ill also sometimes use an 1176 style compressor with the mix in parallel, followed by something like ColdFire, Pyros or Decapitator.
