THeVerb is a spatial convolutional reverb currently ready for early beta testing.

You position your sound source in an extended space in front of the listener. Physically-specified micro-delays locate sources' distance and direction by manipulating realistic phase differences and attenuation. Matched convolutional reverb adds the scale and character of the environment:
  • distant sources sound different from close ones
  • the middle of the room sounds different from the corner
  • reflective surfaces sound different from absorbent ones

Image
A key use case is as a subtle room reverb bringing together tracks that were recorded virtually or in separate sessions as if they happened in the same space and at the same time.

Multiple instances can use the same room preset, each sound positioned at its own location on the sound stage, giving a sense of coherence and the authenticity of a live performance.

The beta program at hartleydsp.com allows you to register and download a free timelimted beta version (Windows VST3). Early beta testers can earn a free full product by submitting useful/detailed reports. I'm looking for feedback on the concept, workflow, and any issues you encounter with installation or operation with different DAWs. On the website you'll also find demos and more information.

Background: This is the first product from a new solo developer. I am a retired academic neuroscientist  with a background in spatial cognition, hearing and memory. I am focussed on developing a few high quality and genuinely useful tools that go beyond those you already have.

Updated to add developer overview video.

This looks pretty interesting ! I'm afraid I can't help you right now with the beta testing as I'm a Mac user, but maybe later if you need some insight from an Apple point of view 😊

Post

Thanks for your interest! I admit I am getting so much interest from MacOS users that I need to think about bringing the Mac implementation forward, so keep following the project. The difficulty is that it is rather costly to get started, so it's a chicken and egg situation; I need the plugin to sell (this is my first plugin) in order to invest in Mac development and support. No free tier with Apple!

Post

Yes, I'm well aware of the Apple problem unfortunately... But for beta purpose, I'm pretty sure users could accept to run a terminal command in order to authorize the plug-in 😊

Version 0.5.0 has been released today. It includes user presets so that you can preserve your favourite settings across instances, projects and sessions, and combine different (room, location and processing) parameters to quickly set-up a new track. Also included - new features suggested by beta testers - tooltips and an additional compact UI scale factor for laptop users and others with limited screen space.

THeVerb has now been updated to version 0.6. The underlying algorithm has been improved and future-proofed such that sound sources can be moved/automated freely in real time with no audible discontinuities. Forthcoming changes will address CPU efficiency and introduce a separate extensible IR library. The fully-functional plugin can be downloaded from hartleydsp.com. As always, beta testers who file useful reports can easily earn access to a free version of the final product.

Every reverb should account for source and mic placement within a 3D sound stage.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

I agree but not many do, so THeVerb fits a useful niche! Some have a few fixed mic and/or source locations, or are limited to one particular space. Not many combine multiple spaces and source locations. What's also surprising is the strength of the spatial signal from the direct signal; combining this with the convolution is quite powerful.

Development continues to progress, and today we have reached beta version 0.7. Which is ready for download at hartleydsp.com.

There have been some significant improvements, and the final form of the plugin is taking shape:
  • smoother sound as the source location changes
  • greatly reduced CPU requirements (10x on my machine)
  • save your own presets
  • improved visualization
  • bug fixes and UI enhancements thanks to our beta testers
  • disk-based IR library and room browser

These features bring complete the initial plan for the full release, but in the meantime I have had some new ideas that I think could make it even better - those new features should be ready for 0.8 and we also plan to overhaul the IR library, expanding the existing factory libraryand replacing some of the current IRs with more realistic or useful versions, as well as adding entirely new sounds. To make the best possible product, we really need input from the community, and those who try out the plugin also help us evaluate the product on different OSs, DAWs and systems as well as finding bugs, and suggesting new features. Beta-testers who enroll before the full release will find it straightforward to earn a free license when the full product is ready. , and so we are delighted to reward those who contribute a couple of constructive, thoughtful reports.

Version 0.7.3, available now to beta testers, introduces several new features including:
  • adjust reverb tone using high- (1) and low-pass (2) filters
  • trim and shape the reverb tail using (3) reverb time and (4) fade time controls
  • compact notifications area for status and warnings (5)
  • optionally sync room selection across different instances (6)
  • optionally display XY location of other instances (7) colour-coded and named using track properties if your DAW supports it.
With the plugin almost feature complete, it couldn't be a better time to download and try it for yourself. Pre-release, beta testers can readily earn a free license to the finished product by submitting as few as 1-2 constructive reports.

The last version was already great, the filters and the time controls are the icing on the cake now! Love it!

Thanks! I must admit, it is shaping up even better than I expected. Nearly finished now, but I have one more smaller feature to add, and another exciting experimental one which will push it into another league, if it works.

Now I just need more people to know about it!

Post

Lovely! I can't wait to share the excitement :)
I think people will know about it as soon at the first official version is out. I for one will try to bang the drum wherever I can!
