YELLOW is a tube compressor and saturator designed to recreate the musical behavior of classic analog tube processors through a new generation of hybrid approach.

Powered by Acustica Audio’s NOVA architecture, it faithfully reproduces the nonlinear response and tonal complexity of real analog circuits.

Available in VST3, AAX, and AU formats for macOS and Windows.

The revolutionary NOVA preamp stage

NOVA (Neural Optimized Volterra Audio) is Acustica Audio’s hybrid architecture and the core of YELLOW’s preamp stage. By combining Acustica’s proprietary Vectorial Volterra Kernels-based technology with advanced neural networks modeling, NOVA captures both the structural behavior and the complex nonlinear response of real tube hardware.

This adaptive interaction allows the processor to react naturally to incoming signal levels, delivering richer harmonics, smoother saturation, and a more convincing analog response.

How the Two Models Work Together

NOVA does not switch between two different models depending on signal level. Instead, it combines them so that both operate simultaneously.

At lower signal levels, the Volterra component preserves the precise frequency and phase response of the original hardware, ensuring tonal accuracy and stability. As the signal is driven harder, the neural model progressively contributes to the behavior of the circuit, reproducing the richer saturation and complex nonlinearities that emerge in real analog gear.

The result is a system where structural accuracy and expressive saturation coexist - delivering deep harmonic character while maintaining the spectral balance of the original hardware.

Three Analog Tube Models

YELLOW includes three distinct tube processor models inspired by different generations of analog hardware. Each unit combines tube preamplification and compression, offering a unique balance of harmonic coloration, dynamic response, and tonal character - from early vintage warmth to smoother modern control.
Selects one of the three available analog tube unit emulations:
  • Vintage — BAOP6
1950s broadcast-style tube unit providing soft compression and strong harmonic coloration. Best for: vocals, bass, drum buses.
  • Classic — GE195
1960s broadcast-style tube compressor design with smooth dynamics and warm tonal character. Best for: vocals, acoustic instruments, mix elements.
  • Modern — VLTPX
Contemporary tube processor offering smoother compression and increased headroom. Best for: mix bus and mastering.

Each unit combines tube preamplification and compression, offering a distinct tonal character. Their visual design follows the same evolution: from the worn vintage look to a cleaner, more refined modern aesthetic.

Is the flickering "light" a bug or meant to be there? It gives me a headache (literally..) which means this plugin almost immediately becomes 100% no-go just from that alone. Can't even demo it properly due to the flickering.

You may also have to put an epilepsy warning somewhere, while it's subtle, I assume that in a dark room it would be enough to possibly trigger epilepsy for somebody very sensitive to flickering.

.. and as always, this is quite buggy. The little time I had testing this until the flickering made me delete it, I found the following:

1) Frequency response is cut off weirdly when running the plugin in a 96kHz session. Very steep cutoff, something like -7dB at 16kHz.. compared to absolutely no cutoff at 16kHz when in a 48kHz session.

2) Nova HQ mode has _completely_ different harmonic behavior depending on incoming volume levels / trim, compared to the normal Nova mode. You actually get increased harmonic distortion the lower the signal is.. very strange behavior. To my ears the normal mode sounded quite a bit better. I suspect something is wrong with the volterra kernel switching in the Nova HQ mode.

3) Oversampling only works for the compressor part of the plugin.. so don't expect any magically good neural network captures without aliasing issues. It's all there just like with NAM and most other companies. Tons of extremely heavy aliasing if you feed it anything around 5kHz or heaven forbid close to 10kHz (where all the hihats, esses, air and all that goodness is). Nova HQ mode fares no better at all.

4) Plugin is quite a bit louder at supposedly unity gain, default preset on startup

5) Same janky behavior as always in any AA product (slow refresh on things, weird UI glitches when switching modes.. etc. etc.).. same inconsistencies as always before. This product happens to be one of those plugins where the input trim actually impacts the levels going into the compressor, unlike some other AA products. As always, the only consistent thing with AA releases is the inconsistency.

Sound wise I guess it's ok but nothing mind blowing in my opinion. I did however quite like the modern tube thing. Compression behavior is nice at slower timing settings on that model and the tonality/flavor of it is really quite nice too. One of the vintage models, the last one in the list, has a huge amount of high end boost and quite a skewed frequency response.. borders on the annoying side of boost. Didn't much care for the compression on either of the vintage models but to be fair, I didn't have the patience to test this thoroughly on a lot of material as the UI flickering truly caused me a lot of headache. I'll possibly revisit this if they ever fix the flicker.

It's the voltage change in the tubes. Doesn't all your tube gear flicker like that? lol

Mystic was like that. Really nice sounding but the constant flickering was obnoxious. I've sworn off Acustica.

I agree with this assessment. The NOVA HQ mode definitely sounds the best but increases CPU usage dramatically. And even with that mode engaged, I still preferred some of my other comps.
