The rise of Linux desktop is inevitable — it’s time music software developers got on board

You don't need to edit config files as root. Nor do you need to edit config files to set up, there's a nice application called Cable.
A link would be nice.

I dual-boot between Linux and Windows, but would prefer to move completely to Linux.BBFG# wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 5:50 pm BTW, Just got a ZDnet article about a MS response to growing customer complaints and it appears as tone deaf as always...
Still no plans for turning off updates completely and not coming back on until user requests it. Only longer pauses between them. And nothing about stripping the commercial bloat that begs to be online. And puts it back on in each update after specifically removing it.
This morning I "downgraded" Windows 11 to Windows 10 Pro. Hurrah!

I should read that sometime instead of just giving a quick take, but I like Benedict's introduction of the tortoise and the hare, albeit thinking along different lines.audiojunkie wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2026 7:24 pm Great article!

For instance: what if, this year or next, there's some indie left-field new entrant vibe-coded by some teenagers with their fledgling autonomous AI buds -- let's call it CorOS -- where you install a base system, it autodetects your hardware and writes drivers if needed, and asks you about your primary use-cases, then optimizes the system for you.
J/K -- a year from now half the population of Earth will be dead from starvation or freezing to death as a result of AI data farms. Plus, the domestic grid will be too unreliable for ordinary kitchen usage, let alone booting a desktop computer. Another quarter of the population will be dead from novel viruses and recreational drugs circulated on paper. (J/K again -- I'm really not so cynical, although maybe I should be -- no, I choose to believe that optimism is always better.)

Although a Catholic upbringing might in some sense fall under "System Configuration" maybe we should have a separate thread for Catholic issues and jokes in Off-Topic.j_e_g wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 10:23 pmj_e_g wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 1:49 pm No, Microsoft does not get a report every time you visit a website with pics of nude nuns.If you're catholic, you can still save your soul by going to confession. In case you and others might be interested, the Midnight Pulp streaming service has a curated selection of nunsploitation films. (That was not my primary interest -- I just happened to notice that while shopping around for low-cost streaming services, because $20+ per month for no ads is too much, especially for a one-person household.)

f**k me! Did you even read what I wrote? NOBODY is interested and Linux's share of the OS market, which is less than 5%, is proof of that. It's not appreciably better than it was 25 years ago.lunardigs wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 8:23 pmYou're not interested. To say 'nobody is interested' is just silly.
Why wouldn't we be? I've probably spent more years using Linux than you have. I gave it a red-hot go, I even spent money on it in that attempt, but it never improved and even today it still doesn't have the level of application support to make it viable. That aspect, the one and only aspect that influences my decision, has not changed since the early 2000's. As I've said. I like Linux but Linux simply cannot do the job I need an OS to do.My bigger point though is that you/your generation naturally wouldn't be. Which is fine.
Yet your fanboi-ism is far greater than anyone else's here. This is why fandom, brand-wars and 90's style consumerism-think doesn't conform well here.
Linux is an open-source, unix-like operating system, originally based on Free-BSD if I recall. For instance, try to define what Linux even is.
It isn't useful for anyone who uses industry-standard tools in pretty much any industry, for the simple reason than virtually no industry-standard tools run on it. Even if you're an office worker, there is no Linux version of MS Office. And then try to define what it isn't. And then ask someone else what it is and isn't
Of course you can. People were saying exactly what you are saying 25 years ago. It hasn't happened yet and there is nothing to suggest it might happen in the future.Disagree. You can't say what will be popular or not.
Maybe for a couple of years, although if you remembered the home video-tape battle for supremacy, the signs were easy enough to see. JVC licensed VHS to anyone who wanted to support it, where Sony kept it's Beta format to itself, which is how VHS became the dominant player. Similarly, Google let everyone have Android, where Microsoft made the mistake of becoming a competitor by making their own phones, so nobody wanted to license their OS.I mean, who here predicted the domination of Android phones, worldwide, by Google? Wouldn't a Microsoft Windows phone have been more likely? Or some other established brand like Blackberry, or Nokia?
Which is still everybody. Windows remains by far the most used desktop OS and that's not going to change just because you want it to.Nobody who went to school. Kids have to have laptops for school these days, they are completely familiar with desktop computing. There are plenty of people who never had a Windows desktop, or desktop whatsoever. In fact, many have only ever had a phone as their personal computer.

Quite the opposite. Umm, that's an email I received about Windows 11 development a couple of weeks ago, what does it prove? The reality is that the current share of desktop OS for Linux is 4.7%, which is double what it was a few years ago. But "double" in this scenario is only another 2%, which is nothing but statistical noise. If Microsoft are worried about anyone coming to eat their lunch its Apple and Google, not Linux.machinesworking wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 11:36 pm This part is provably false.

You have to realise it won't be decided by consumers. MS maintains very strong relationships with vendors and it will do whatever it takes to ensure that their OS is the one big vendors like Adobe support. Corel tried to get out from under the MS umbrella but were brought quickly back into the fold. When Microsoft wanted Avid to switch development to Windows, they gave them a software company they had bought for something like $60 million to entice them over. Linux will never be able to compete with that, it will always be the awkward little brother, the last one standing when the music stops. Microsoft have too much to lose and Linux has nothing at all to gain, in that if you're giving shit away, how many people you're giving it to is immaterial. That's just how it is, how the world works.
Developers won't want to support it either, for reasons explained by someone a few pages back. Fragmentation means testing and supporting a dozen or more distros and several different ways of doing everything. It's a significant drain on resources for minimal return. It just ain't gonna happen.
Did you read the article? It's talking about a Linux install with no GUI. i.e. It will be just like working in DOS. Who the f**k is going to be interested in that? Welcome back to 1990, everybody!BBFG# wrote: Mon Mar 23, 2026 11:44 pmA smart Linux move:

I read it and changed it accordingly prior to you quoting me. And also added two more reads.
If you're content with others deciding things for you that's fine. More and more people have had enough.
