Rather surprised that Synapse Audio's Orion has not been mentioned. Still using it today with vst2 stuff. Maybe you could call it a studio rather than a daw though.

I think the assumption in recent times is that most musicians work in dark rooms with dilated pupils (the musicians, not the rooms -- as far as we know).

Synapse Audio's Orion Platinum v4 is how I came in to this hobby, circa 2003. I learned a lot from Orion's help file. I wish they had kept the v4 skin/theme as an option in later versions.

For the reason the DAWs I / we used first I moved from Cubase/Logic to Ableton Live: To make music instead of constantly pressing esc, 1 etc. and hassle with (cubase) and fight against the host (logic) instead of actually making the music

No selecting if new channel is this and that and how many routings and crap. Just open host, hit keys and it records already ffs.

I use Skale Tracker currently even though development stopped in 2004... Sounds great & many cool features under the hood, The VSTi version can be loaded in many hosts thus composition in Skale plus the Host-
