I love this track. It's better than some of my own tracks and the instruments work well. The mix is very good (again, better than my own tracks). What software did you use?

Hey Hipster! I just noticed Ruby. I will listen tonight in headphones. My office PC speakers are terrible.

I like to use Cubasis as my DAW. It's not the latest and greatest, but it does everything I need with MIDI and audio. Since I don't use any external gear, I often use MIDI generators like Piano Motifs to create short phrases that I can edit and arrange in Cubasis. It's actually pretty sophisticated in that it provides an extremely wide range of preset styles that I can configure and edit to my hearts content. It even has a "dice" button that generates a new surprise every time. I must have 100 or more software synths that I can play against that MIDI data. Each synth in turn has a vast number of presets that I can audition and pick the ones I like. I'm never at a loss for new and interesting sounds. For vocals, I like to use bare acapella tracks from places like Looperman. I put it on Track 1 and just start creating music underneath to go along with it. I posted one of those here about a week ago called "A Bad Guess".

My approach to music making imposes strict limits on what I can do. Sometimes I think it would be much easier to hook up keyboards and mics, and just start jamming. I have a closet full of those. The downside to that approach is that I would limit my creativity to a single location (the guest bedroom). By using only an iPad, stylus, and headphones, I can throw my entire "studio" into a backpack and go anywhere. I do that, often. I composed "Riverboat Twilight" while cruising the Mississippi on the top deck of a riverboat. I wrote "Showdown At Starved Rock" while sitting in St. Louis Canyon, next to the waterfall. When we returned home, I took those workups out to my patio and edited, arranged, and mixed them, all while smelling fresh cut grass and waving to my neighbors as they walked their dogs. Try doing that in a dark, air-conditioned studio.

I was afraid that I would quickly run out of ideas using this limited approach. Not so much. As of this morning, I have 363 tracks on SoundCloud, so I don't worry about that anymore. I don't write to any specific genre. My so-called "music" doesn't really fit in anywhere, so I just tag it all as "Paulieworld". Problem solved. I am resolved to be a misfit and an outcast. I'm nearing retirement. I've been beaten up, insulted, overworked, and underpaid. So, basically, I just don't care what anybody thinks anymore. I'm not angry. In fact, I'm quite upbeat and happy. The phone is ringing. Probably somebody complaining about something. Gotta run. Have a nice day!

Nice. I use FL Studio and their stock plugins as my main production tool.
