No, it's not. It's like you've never used an analog synth before.

I get the calibration point - but what I’m talking about here seems more architectural than calibration-related (the chorus/limiter). I sent him a note.

Thanks for the kind words. It was a fun track to do. The synth sounds awesome so I give it a lot of the credit.audiojunkie wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 7:41 pmThat’s quite amazing that you can throw something so polished together in just a few short hours! My tribute to what will become one of my favorite synths. Looks like I'm going to have to eat some crow here.
With the exception of piano and drums, all other tracks (19 in all) are TAL J8X.
I give you "May Pal Tal" (short for Talia)

Ah the old "this emulation doesn't sound *exactly* like *my* 30-year old vintage analog synth, therefore it must be bad" chestnut...
Or perhaps it's just true.Seafire Mk2 wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 8:05 pm That's an excuse used by devs to explain why their emulation doesn't sound like hardware.

Hi everybody.
Back modestly after long years of absence.
I wouldn't have said better.
Although I never had any hardware unit of his emulations (and probably never will have) I purchase immediately all his plugins (like I do for example with GForce for their Oberheim emulations). TAL -> instant buy. And yet, I also love my workhorses as Zebra or Vital. For Roland types of sounds I have never found anything better than Tal's plugins.

Patrick is a fantastic dev and I end up buying everything he releases. They all sound great and it's nice to support a dev doing consistently great work at affordable prices.

They of course sound different due to their different architectures, but I love also the strings we can get from the Jupiter-8 and from the Juno-60:jamcat wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 5:29 pm Neither Diva nor any Jupiter model sounds like a JX-8P. You will not get the JX-8P string sound from anything else. If you’re just looking for a “close enough” synth then any analogue synth model is “close enough” to any other analogue synth model, if you don’t have standards.
So you probably do not and never have required the very specific and recognizable sound of the JX-8P strings or brass. In that case, perhaps a true and proper JX-8P model isn’t anything special to you.
But, the JX-8P is “the most amazing synth on the planet” for synth strings.
They too are really amazing string-synths as well (but for that type of sounds I still prefer the paraphonic synths as the Roland RS-505 for example. Xils-Lab made an amazing one that I have and use... but I would really like to get one from Patrick).

Wonderful video!solidtrax wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 7:07 am Patrick did it again =) Somehow he nails the sound everytime he puts something out.
I also love the extras, a few of which I demonstrate here:
With great tips!
Thanks a lot!

What's so good about this? It just looks like another in a long line of basic Roland synths, with no cross-modulation or anything much to recommend it beyond nostalgia. Unless the DYN slider does something magical, why would anyone pay Au$90 for this when they can get something like GR8 for free?

So good, this plugin resurrected my grandmother!
But that's why we're all different. I'm sure you can understand that just because you don't find it useful to you, that other people may not have the same opinion... I mean, I don't really like stuff like Massive or Serum or Sylenth, but that doesn't mean others don't love them. Find what works for you, and let others enjoy the other stuff...
It's OK to not like something, if it doesn't work for you. Personally, I've been waiting for a good JX8P for a while, it just has a vibe and character I love and is quite unique sounding, despite being a relatively basic synth. And it's that vibe and character I wanted, and no, I don't get anywhere near the same vibe with GR8.BONES wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 11:44 pm What's so good about this? 2nd day with this excellent plug in. amazing additions to the original JX 8p. The filter has a modern mode which is a game changer. FX reverb and delay are just stellar. 12 voice polyphony. come with the EXACT factory presets such as Waveaura which I could not get any other synth to do correctly even after trying for years. arpeggiator is excellent. this thing kicks ass.

Yeah Waveaura (and Waveola) is nice - reminds me of the PPG for that kind of stuff...

Here's my attempt at the grey brutalist look of the JX-10. For those of us who aren't into preschool color schemes

Is it? I don't get that from any of the demo tunes. It sounds terribly anodyne to me, but that could just be the style of music in the demos. To me, though, that confirms my feeling that it's a very basic synth.beely wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 11:52 pmPersonally, I've been waiting for a good JX8P for a while, it just has a vibe and character I love and is quite unique sounding, despite being a relatively basic synth.
Maybe that's down to your skill level or effort? Or the presets? And it's that vibe and character I wanted, and no, I don't get anywhere near the same vibe with GR8.
Sure but the level of enthusiasm about this thing is, to my mind, ridiculous for something so basic. Hence my desire to understand the appeal. It seems to me that TAL has a intensely loyal following for no particular reason. I got TALpha really cheap but it's also just another lacklustre Roland sounding synth. I think I might have used in once in one of my 80s covers and that's it. And, honestly, TALpha seemed the most interesting of TAL's synths. But that's why we're all different. I'm sure you can understand that just because you don't find it useful to you, that other people may not have the same opinion...
Yeah, but I understand why people like those things, even though I have absolutely no interest in them, either. No, scratch that, I have no understanding at all of why anyone likes Sylenth 1. There is nothing about that synth I find even slightly appealing.I mean, I don't really like stuff like Massive or Serum or Sylenth, but that doesn't mean others don't love them.
Maybe it's that, even though my very first synth was a Roland and I've owned quite a few since, I've always felt they sounded a bit second-rate and mostly sold on price and for the bells and whistles, rather than because they sounded good. Softube's Model 80 has given me some small insight into why people might like the Juno sound but, honestly, if it wasn't for the extras Softube added I wouldn't have any time for it, either.
