APC is all I know.

For a long while I was very opposed to rap and hip-hop - I'd only ever experienced the shit in the charts, but APC have made me thirsty for more of the good stuff!!

Checkout APC if you don't already know them. Quality productions - esp. Perpendicular.

all albums/eps from apc are great. but "tragic epilogue" and "arrythmia" are absolutely outstanding (not just for hh heads). must have!

also interesting, anti pop vs. mathew shipp (<- jazz).

and to add to my list: prefuse 73 (electronica hh), vaist aire, cannibal ox, prince po, buck 65, sixtoo.

I know Lady J. does alot of dance stuff - but I wonder if Hip Hop is one of them?

She was eager to assist on my 'This Ain't Hip Hop' tune, and she does do ALOT of different styles I've discovered?

Where is 'SHAWNNA ID BLAZIN!' when you need her?

But I enjoy the 'ol' skool' Hip Hop myself. MC Junior, Maestro Fresh Wes, Kool Moe Dee - or are they considered 'ol' skool Rap'? Shows you what I know!

i've come across some prefuse 73 on www.last.fm (when it was still in operation) and I was pretty blown away.
great stuff -- very well thought out
almost like a hip hop string quartet moving, interacting parts
the very sort of thing I'd like to be able to do in about a year

so are there other electronic hh artists I should know about? since he was the one that got that designation above.

A mate of mine recently turned me onto illogic - celestial clockwork lp - amazing lyricist, blueprint on the beats. Also got hold of some immortal technique - outstanding if you like sometimes quite offensive hardcore political stuff e.g. 'bush and bin-laden, are 2 seperate heads on the same seven headed dragon' or words to that effect - definately not the kind of stuff you normally play at parties.

I used to be a vocalist/lyricist for a group doing hip-hop-ish stuff (re: trip-hop, techno & dnb amalgam with me shouting my mouth off, stoned as hell tripping on conspiracy theories etc. for the most part). After a long hiatus during which I lost my marbles and scribbled lyrics down on my arms, legs and various scraps of paper, the walls etc. I am now trying to learn the music making craft in order to one day (hopefully) get some stuff out that I can be proud of.

I add my 2 cents here, kitty yo has released a compilation called 'futurism ain't shit' which sports pretty much every twisted style and derivation spawned from hiphop today, you can find apc's ping pong and vast aire and prefuse 73 in there among other stuff like funkstorung. It's an excellent starting point for further digging. Especially if you, like me, are interested in the more electronica side of it. I found out Dabrye, and fell in love with his style, very slick idmesque moody hip hop instrumental, he's also the guy who made the tune in the motorola razr commercial you know? And also Slicker, way cool organic and live sound for an act in this genre.

Sure these two don't rap actually so i dunno if you can call this hiphop but their music definitely has that freshness and that mood that made people recognize early hiphop.
