Actually, the Toto Africa brass is originally created on GS1, not CS80.

The Final Countdown brass is a layer of two or three synths, JX8P was just one of them.

I don't think you are right re: Africa...

yeah.. I think that is it...GS-1 was a FM synth and no way was it going to sound like the Synth Brass in Africa imho.. that needs good old analog imho.

But FM handles percussive type sounds (like a kalimba) great imho.

I have had a quick play around this weekend, I have never had the hardware variant, so can't really do an A2B comparison, but I will check on youtube for some video's. If impressed enough I will buy it. The demo version kicks out white noise too often.

The JX-8P was Roland's analogue answer to the DX7. The JX series also marks the last—and most advanced—analogue synth line from Roland, before they went digital with LA synthesis and samples.

Didn't demo, just bought. Sounds amazing. Loaded up 'Soundtrack' and spent half an hour pretending to be Angelo Badalamenti.

There are some other differences in sound between JX8P and JX10/MKS70, so that would have to be a different mode of operation, if emulation accuracy is to be preserved.

Never owned any but when I had googled it.. the differences that were noted was
1)Chorus
2) More Polyphony
and of course 3) the two layered tones..

The JX8P doesn't even have the same chorus as the JX10 / MKS70, as we have found out with Patrick to our surprise. The JX10 is supposed to be two-JX8Ps so one would expect all things to be identical, but the chorus certainly isn't.

Also the filter is different. The JX-8P is very tame, whereas the JX-10 filter will go into self-oscillation.

I on the other hand, love Roland Synths, which is what brought me to Tal many years ago, and ended up loving Tal's synths.
This one and the J-8 in particular are in my top tier favourite emulations.

So are you saying your opinion of the JX-8P has changed since you posted this?

I didn't like ALL Roland Synths...
For instance, hardware wise I never cared for the alpha junos or the jx-8p/jx-10.

I really am not a fan of the Tal-Pha.. (don't think I ever used it in a project and I have had it from before day 1)... but I love the J-8X... the software, though I didn't like the hardware... at that time anyway (1987 or so)
