I currently use the famous E piano samples in kontakt player with an e-mu x-board 49 and plug in sustain pedal. I find at default the samples are peaking/clipping (hitting the red). Is it a matter of the velocity curve from the x-board itself or are there tweaks in kontakt I should be aware of? I use reason studios as my DAW of choice and don't issues with other vsts or any of reason's built in rack instruments.

Have you already tried turning down Kontakt's instrument output volume slider toward the top right corner?

It's probably worth checking to see what the volume slider is set to. It should be at -6 dB by default, but because MIDI CC 7 controls that volume slider, if it unintentionally gets reset to 127 in your DAW it will jump up to 0 dB instead.

yup I've exhausted the settings in kontakt, made sure it was -6db. I reset my velocity curve settings on my old x-board, and it seemed to solve most of the problem. I have a feeling the controller resets to "max full on mash" settings every time I turn it on, which is annoying. I have to see if there's a way to get the old thing to save my settings. Kontakt, and the classic E instrument do not seem to like full on 127 velocities. My old x-board is also hard to adjust velocity for as it uses unweighted plastic keys so it's hard to finesse the settings. They give you 8 pre-set curves, the default being #8 "full max". I wasn't getting any subtly out of the instrument, just full on slams that would hit red if I dug in. My ultimate solution may just have to be investing in a new keyboard controller, something more suited for piano work. Or making sure the settings aren't on "full send".

This is from the manual, is there a velocity curve you'd recommend?

I'll report back if I still have issues.

How is the linear (#1) response? If you're still getting the loud dynamics too easily, you could see if the compressed (#2) option is better. That's probably what I'd gravitate toward for playing electric or acoustic piano sounds from a synth action keyboard.

yea curve #2 seems to be the one. I managed get the settings saved to a patch (which it annoyingly doesn't default to)
